btw, how would you compare it to the e60 for sounds and features? same?

The same sounds and styles...No D-beam on the E-50...and the keys are shorter than the E-60...and of course..not as many keys..

This E-50 is soooo wayyyy coolllll..So easy to turn on and play a quick idea...I decided it is worth keeping around the house/studio/ and gigs too...For so little money..I am keeping it a while..even if the Juno Stage works out great for the band gigs....If the Juno Stage doesn't work for me ..look for it on the trading block..

Since I have this E-50 set up as a clone of my G70..It would be foolish to sell it....Money isn't the factor..space was...but I will make room..Anyone interested in the EMU Xboard61...with 4 or 5 CD's of Soft synths (EMU cd's)..Like new in the factory box....List for $350..sold for $250..make me an offer..

The only serious drawback to the E-50 (and E-60) is the 64-note polyphony, especially when some entry level arrangers are now using 128.

I suppose 64 could be adequate, unless you are using a sound in the LH, and stacked voices in the RH, whilst using accompaniment....perhaps not many would use it this way, but it is something to consider.

You are probably better off keeping it as alternative to the G70 since you have stated it could be used on your gigs.

Ian, Roland handles polyphony better than all others..It's allocation works great..I have never experienced drop out from any of my Roland 64 voice instruments..I can not say the same about some other brands I used..and they are touted at 128...the PSR 9000 was the worst...

Even the old Sound Canvass 24 and 28 voice units did well with allocation..

Probably so, Fran, but I was able to get drop-out on an E-60 I tried out whilst in Newfoundland, last year....doesn't the E-50 use the same engine?

I remember the same issue didn't happen on the G70 I had here for a while.

LH voice (strings), layered RH voices (piano and strings, 8 parts accompaniment, and using the sustain pedal maxed out the E-60 I played...it's a good test...try it on your E-50.

New entry level 'boards, like the PSR- S710, now have double the poly of MOTL instruments of a few years ago.

I'm sure Roland must have new MOTL in the works...as well as new flagship models to eventually replace the G70/E80.

Ian, I tried your test in layered selections as you mentioned in split mode with variation 4 arranger style..and no real noticeable drop out..

I then tried the real torture test..piano mode with stereo strings layered with stereo strings and piano with full keyboard recognition..sustaining with repeated 10 note chords..after the 3rd or 4th strike ..yes ..drop out was evident..but in a way you could live with..the drop outs were the added stereo strings..the arranger play had no evident drop outs..This is where Roland shines with the priority allocation to most important parts...

No one in their right mind would play as above ..even with 256 poly..

My biggest nightmare (polyphony wise) was the night I used my new PSR320..trying to play over sequences...It was only 32 voice..and the way the Yamaha worked....when it reached it's limit..it shut down..no sound for several seconds...

Even my 28 (maybe 24 voice) voice E-66 never failed to keep the music going when playing over a seq..Allocation is the answer...

I qualify for that...

Personally, Fran, I rarely use left hand voices...I prefer to put the pads in the style...usually only one or two notes, as I find string sounds in the left hand too "full" and not quite natural sounding....I sometimes use an organ sound the left, and sometimes a piano sound, depending on the effect I want.

I could get by easily with 64 note poly with my playing style and the right accompaniment style...but 32 note poly on anything would be a bit constricting for me.

The E-60 would be perfect for 99% of amatuer or pro players...ditto the E-50.
