For those too young-they're worth a listen. For those of us who were around in their prime....listen again....especially Out In The Country...Easy To Be Hard...Pieces of April.

It was 70's rock, but classy, sensitive and memorable.

Check them out....AGAIN!

Trivia:

Hoyt and Mae Axton ("Heartbreak Hotel") are the only mother-son team to each be credited with writing a #1 record.

How about "One" -- with a symphony orchestra underscore, complete with terminally long intro that has nothing at all to do with the song?

Glad I didn't get the arranging call on that one, Russ!

As for 3DN, the original lineup backup band is what to pay attention to.

Every song was actually an intricate arrangement of parts and interplay between the instruments reminiscent of the kind of thing the Funk Brothers were doing up at Motown Detroit in that era, but with a decidedly "white" or "rock" twist. Righ down to use of the tamborine as a definite part of some of the arrangements.

Recordists should take more than a little bit of notice to these great old pop cuts. One of he few bands that did not need to resort to session players when they went into the studio.

The singers were great, but without the "frame" of that band, there would have not been the entire "picture" that worked so well.

Extra Credit for anyone who can identify the brand and type of electric piano featured by this band...

Looks and sounds like a Wurlitzer 140 B...one of the first Wurlies with that distinctive vibrato.

Thanks, folks. Seem like there are little "gems" out there from every period and in every genre.

And that's part of what makes this business so awsome!

I did "Easy to be Hard" and "Pieces of April" Friday and Saturday night. I'll do "Out In the Country" this week-end.
