You're right. He's pretty pathetic. And i don't even like country music. The little girl deserved more courtesy than that.

When we have sunk so low as to have a Congressman shout 'You lie!' to the President of our country, does (or even should) anyone really care what is said to a country singer?

What is disgusting is that, in all probability, Kanye or Serena Williams (another shining example of what passes for American 'values') is likely to pay a higher price for their childish behavior than the Congressman.

Which, in a way, probably reflects the importance we put as a society on each of these petulant losers...

Diki, I know you'll agree that the U.S. doesn't have any exclusives when it comes to a general disrespect component of society, so don't feel bad about it happening in your country. It seems to be a global attitude.

124 is right. We've all witnessed everything from shouting matches to outright barroom-type brawls, in legislative bodies in Asia, Europe, and South America. Maybe it's something in the global water supply or maybe we, as a global society, just seem to take one step back socially, for every one step forward technologically. I think the anonymity of the Internet has emboldened us to the point that we think it's ok to be rude even when we're not hiding behind a computer screen. We're becoming more and more accepting of bad behavior (or maybe just jaded); witness the shoe throwing incident with President Bush and the 'hero's welcome' greeting the offender after little more than a wrist-slap for punishment; or the release and subsequent 'hero's welcome' afforded the Lockerbie bomber after the mass murder of nearly 300 fellow human beings. Sure, Kanye West is an easy target for us to vent on, but what we should really be concerned about is the global deterioration of just plain old good manners and respect for each other as fellow inhabitants of this planet. JMO.

Chas, you may be onto something here. I think technology has enabled us to be more insular, with the consequence that we're forgetting, and new generations not even learning, about what it takes to just plain get along. The skillset required for decent interaction is fading away. Hell, we don't even play in bands anymore!

chas... you are SO right with that statement ... I have been saying for years that starting with young people, all societies are being TAUGHT to be disrespectful and desensitized to feelings of guilt ... just watch any 'kids' show and see how disrespectful they are to each other and to adults ... and as for video games !!! ... don't get me started on that ... ... As a grandfather I keep praying that it's not too late ... but I don't only pray, I also try to TEACH !!! ...

Of course he doesn't. Isn't he about to open up a tour? This was a pure publicity stunt. It got him on Leno quick enough, got his mug out there, didn't it? I hit the switch on the TV right there.

I had luckily recorded a couple of football games so didn't watch it. No, on second thought it wasn't lucky, I did it on purpose.

All the new media technology just shines a very bright light on the same human behavior that has been occuring in the dark
since the dawn of consciousness.
Thankfully more of it is now in the open so we can begin to curb it.
As far as kids go, I guess we could go back to beating them into submission.
On the other hand Serena has a good excuse.
She's on steroids!

See, well if that is true (the upcoming Tour) then that's even worse, because it WAS quite a deliberate and tactical act designed purely for his own publicity

Some people in the PR industry might even applaud (privately or publicly) that stunt....

(Yes, I said STunt.... )

Mind you, I guess before we adopt any attitude of smug superiority, we ought to take a look at how we behave on this very forum, and realize that these people are by no means unique

Mind you, once upon a time, respect was EARNED, it didn't come as part of the whole 'self-esteem' package. There's a lot of people right now believe they deserve some kind of respect just for breathing in and breathing out...

I think what we are all looking for is 'politeness'...

And there is a delicious way of showing politeness without having to show respect

Well, I guess somethings up with the tour: http://www.inentertainment.co.uk/20090916/lady-gaga-and-kanye-west-tour-dates-the-disappearing-act/

Maybe Lady Gaga's not going to take any chances with this guy. I'm sure she could take her pick of artists to tour with.

I have seen that kind of behavior almost anywhere I go, in the parking lots, at the store, on the road.....etc.. And then they claim discrimination!

IS NOT THE COLOR, IS THE ATTITUDE!!

You know, I've got a theory. I'm not condoning what Mr. West did in any way, but I wonder if there would be the same level of outrage and outright hate if he had done the same thing to, say, Rosie O'Donnel. I'm starting to believe that the degree of anger is directional proportional to our perception of the 'victim' (and the perpetrator). When you look at the clip, was it what he did or was it who he did it to? He didn't just ruin someone's moment, he dared to ruin the moment of our squeaky-clean, deliciously innocent, little fair-haired country princess. Unforgivable. Next thing you know, he'll be crying discrimination.

Mind you, this is just a hunch.

124, I agree with you on the "rude is rude" part but I'm not so sure my hunch is that far off base. It's not the negative reaction he got (include ME in that number), it's the degree and depth of it. Maybe you should read some of the blogs, tweets, etc. You'll see what I mean. Sometimes during quiet times, you forget what's always lurking just beneath the surface, but then someone will post something like the post a couple of posts up and WHAM!, back to reality.

Peace,

chas

Yes, chas, I do see what you mean without having to wade through a bunch of garbage in blogs, etc. (they're not generally noted for intelligent comment on anything). It's just an ugly scenario all round that I absolutely have no time for. Nobody gains anything from it.

I'll take it, and let me tell you why..
.I Have african american friends, guess waht they are saying about Kayne West and Serena?
"They have the rigth to do that", "it's freedom of speach"
"If it was a white person, nobody will care"
"Remember John McEnroe?"

So what they are saying is, "we are being discriminated against because we/they are black"

As I recall, McEnroe paid fines in proportion to the size of the prize back in those days ...

The major difference today compared to 20 years ago is the level of media exposure ANY incident by ANYONE gets ... and how the media continues to feed on something long after it is newsworthy ... or at least until some other trash incident occurs ...

President Obama called him a "jackass". Does that count? Or do your African-American friends speak for all American Blacks. I've got a few White friends and I sure hope they don't speak for all Whites. I mean these nutcases believe in all kinds of crazy stuff, like legalizing medical marijuana, a woman's right to choose, equal pay for women, background checks for gun sales, affordable quality health care, boycotting products from countries that don't abide by child labor laws; you know, a lot of sick sh!t like that. You think those guys speak for all Whites? Of course you don't....you live in Texas, right?

Making sweeping assumptions about people is the hallmark of prejudice. Why if I subscribed to such a thing, I might be asking to see your green card about now, Mr Lopez. Now wouldn't you find that offensive? I would. You know, Tony's right. The media DOES pick known hot-button issues to highlight, because it 'sells papers', so to speak. We would do well not to get sucked into the hype. We take a case of (relatively minor) bad behavior (as acknowledged by everyone, even his peers) and explode it into something much, much worse. I mean, don't we really WANT to live in peace and harmony with one another?

Well, that would be the end of THIS forum...

It's getting to the point that we equate the LOUDEST thing to the majority. Democracy by bullhorn. The trouble is, Obama and the left are too polite to shout back.

What I want to know is, if an insurance company drops your coverage the minute you get something expensive to fix, how come THAT isn't a 'death panel'? The Democrats are idiots when it comes to pushing 'hot buttons' in the jackass population. And the Republicans are masters of it.

Actually, I was shocked (and pretty pleased) when I heard Obama say that - but can I ask:
Did that get a lot of coverage in the States (positive or negative) because I don't often see or hear Presidents commenting that bluntly on issues such as this.

Anyone surprised at that?
