I saved for a year here in college to get a Trinity. After I spent that money, I wanted to compliment it with a Roland XP-50 or 60. I just decided I'll wait till I get out to get an XV-88

Hey, nice to find so many fellow poor people around here. I'm a European college student.

I'm a former poor college student . . . now a poor music teacher . . . . I can dig. The only way to build up your equipment on a shoestring budget is to make careful key purchases over 10 years (and try not to let too much get stolen!). By then, you are married with 3 kids, are gigging constantly and are glad that you drove a piece of junk car in college so that you could get your gear.

I find the other way is to visit my local cash converters (and hope what you're buying wasn't nicked). The other way is to learn electronics, and make as much as you can. And have very understanding, semi-loaded parents, share with your siblings, and slog your guts out...

Another option is to live 5-10 years behind the times, buying the old, powerful gear. There's still alot of music left in the old gear, and you can get the stuff on the cheap as everyone rushes off to get the latest, greatest toys. I've seen used TX-816 going for $200.

Note: I'm not actually doing this, just recommending it .

That approach worked for me for about 5 months, but then I got a set of V-Drums, an A-90EX, and an XV-5080 is on the way. I couldn't afford it without having spent those 8 years working on a doctorate. I had to sell lots of gear to survive college (buying food instead), but I am making up for it now.

Students: hang in there, work hard and your rewards will come back to you in spades,

Chris
