It was time for an early Christmas gift.
No more distorted harmonies, no more....
I looked at the HarmonyM, but it didn't have enough features.
With the VL2 you get up to 8 back up vocals:
Things like Pink Floyd: Another Brick in the Wall, singing in an Arena with fans as your back up, Gregorian Chant, Kanye West and of course all your favorite standards. With over 200 Presets I'll be busy for a while...
The harmonies sound so real, that even my wife said wow...

Check out the video two:
http://www.tc-helicon.com/voicelive2.asp

The set up was super easy. I just hit set up Midi on the VL2 and it did it automatically.

I recorded something real quick on the internal hard drive of the T3 without any editing; just to demonstrate the VL2; so don't be too hard on me...

Some questions Eric:

Does it track chords any differently or better than the Harmony M does?

I'm used to using a rack unit for my harmonizer, with the unit on the floor, is that a hindrance to making changes, changing presets, etc.

Nice demo you made...

I had a chance to play with one of these last week. It does work easily and sounds great.
No setup except set the keyboard midi stuff.

Hi Bill,
I never tried the Harmony M, so I have no comparison; however they advertise it as having 5X the processing power of regular floor units.
So far it is tracking chords great for me and I have had no trouble. Just a whole lot of fun.

Eric, what a nice piece of gear- I want one now. I need to stay away from this site!

Anyways, I liked your track. How did you do the music? Was it with styles, sequenced? What kind of keyboard?

Thanks!

Hi montunoman,
I used my T3 with a midi I got for my T2 (but I also have a style for that song).
I edited and revoiced some tracks, turned on the Voice Live2 hooked it up to the Tyros3 and recorded it directly to the internal hard drive of the T3.
My main purpose was to show the quality of the Voice Live2.
I love it.
Eric

Hi Brian,
I had similar concerns as you have about the foot switches.
First off I decided to have it on a stand close to me since I already use 2 foot switches and I wanted to be able to see it better.
The switches are very easy to push with your finger. Second you can very easily do a step program with all the changes you want (like building up a song). Once done all you need to hit is the step switch.
So for me I either hit the Harmony switch to turn Harmonies on and off, or the step switch for more advanced changes.
I hope this helps.
Eric

That's a very sweet cover of the song Eric. And the vocal harmony parts are awesome.

That Dave Gilmour guitar part really nails it. It sounds very authentic.

Eric,

It is too bad that after buying a $4500 list keyboard you have to spend that kind of money for a decent harmonizer. I wish Yamaha would get with the program. Ketron, Roland and Korg all have onboard harmonizers that are good quality, Yamaha could do it too.

Super stuff Eric, and a great demo.

That harmonizer has features that all keyboard manufacturers would be wise to implement on their arrangers.

Makes all present arranger on-board harmonizers sound pretty meek and plain, as well as the other out-board harmonizers.

Maybe some clever arranger companies will license this technology....I'm sure they are having a good look at it.

Nice work.

Hi Tom
Not a problem, because I was able to buy the VL2 from the money I saved by getting a great deal on the T3.
I heard on the YPKO forum that Yamaha is talking with TC Helicon and that the T4(?) might get one... Who knows.
Anyways, I don't have to sell the VL2 if I get a new KB. It'll last for a while.

With these different harmonizers, can one effectively and realistically sound like a backing group.

Example: In The Still of the Night by the Five Satins. Before I come in with the lead vocal, can I cut the "output" of my voice that's feeding into the microphone, so that all I hear is "harmonized" voices without my own voice standing out? Also, can you alternate between original voice and harmonized voice quickly and smoothly (as in the release (bridge) part of the song?

I believe you can do all that.
There is a setting for turning the lead vocal off. Program as step one by hitting step button Then turn lead vocal back on and turn off Harmonizer and program as step two.
Each time you hit step you go back and forth between one and two.

That's great news, Eric, if it is true.

Certainly Yamaha's tired old vocalizer needs to be retired, although guys like Dan Rymut have tamed the snarly beast very nicely.

I use the harmonizer on the S910 to run my CS01 mono synth through, and achieve pseudo polyphony.

This is the first harmonizer sound that truly interests me. Now I got the GAS again.

That's a great job you did on The Wall there.

Keep your ears peaked, you are definitely going to be hearing this one on many a jingle and commercisl, underscores too! I better get some money together and get one before everybody else beats me to the sound. Again. Heh.

Thanks for the post!

Hey Ian,
I have tried every trick in the book to tame the T3 VH. It just didn't work and kept distorting.
I must say though that I love Rock and the Harmonizer doesn't like it if you sing to high.
The same with my wife (who is by the way a much better singer than me ). Her voice can go pretty high and it so frustrating to have a great KB and crappy vocals.
Now she can sing as high as she wants and the VL2 is right there with her with great vocals. Yeah!
Yamaha has reworked pretty much everything except the VH. So they got to do something with the next model...

I hope they change the VH for the next Tyros and PSR-S-series, Eric.

Since I don't do vocals, it was never that critical to me, but I do get your point very well.

Time will tell.

Same here. It is the first Harmonizer that caught my interest when I heard the demos.
Now that Frankie is a dealer I'm sure you can get a great deal on it.
Good luck.

I want a harmonizer/pitch correction unit that will make me a good singer...when I am not! :-). Andy Williams quality will do nicely!

Maybe one that wil follow the melody I play in RH...and do pitch correct to make my voice in tune?

Can this unit be used with more than one mic? Or would each singer in a band need one? Thanks!

It's really designed to use with only one mic.
However, you could put 3 mics through a mixer and bus it with one cable to the unit in order to use the effects. You couldn't use the harmonizer though.
If you just need effects there are better and less expensive solutions. If you need a harmonizer, then each band member needs one.
But then again; if you have several band members singing you wouldn't need a harmonizer...
I hope this helps.

Just purchased the VL2 and must say it's MUCH better than Voiceworks Plus :
Ease of use,
Fantastic effects (especially the reverbs)
'listens' to audio for chords,
no midi needed

I just connect the T3 outputs to the AUX (stereo) input of the VL2, Mike and from the VL2 balanced outputs to the L1's.... that's all folks

Not even a mixing console is needed anymore.. the VL2 has it all.

If you had multiple singers, all you would need would be something that switched the routing on the mikes. Two is easy, a simple A/B crossover switch would do it. Three or more would be a bit more complex, but still doable. Main thing is, it needs to be just switches, using busses on a board gives you too much opportunity to accidentally send it two voices, which will confuse the hell out of it!

Other thing to watch out for is having similar levels, EQ and tone from all the different singers, or their will be big differences in level, depending on who is singing...

I am interested in how the TC helicon Voice live 2 tracks harmonies without the midi chord input form an instrument...as with Mp3's....or singing along with just playing songs not using the midi chord input as the unit can track audio signals...that alone is worth the money for this wonderful unit.....anyone? Tonight I'm going to Demo one at a friends studio.

It's an incredible device, but for me it has too many foot-switch buttons that are relatively close to each other. I don't want to look down to activate the harmonizer, or change base keys. Just want to set it up, turn it on or off when needed--that's all.

Donny ... The digitech Vocalist EX I have previously posted about does not need any midi input ... All I had to do was choose the harmony 'style' I wanted and press what key I was singing/playing in and go ... I never got a 'complaint' about the harmonies and in fact got quite a few compliments, even from other musicians ... AND I'm not saying the quality is the same, but the digitech didn't cost anywhere near the MSRP for the V2 ...

How about recording your 'try-out' and posting the results? ...

Tony the new TC VL2 is above and beyond anything out there previously. I've used most on stage in teh past... The fact that it can track & recognize audio signals, from guitar, KB, Mp3, and give you up to 8 part harmonies with so much quality, efx,& fluctuations is fantastic...no need to set the key each time either...just plug in and sing. I would say the price is well justified for a piece of gear of vocal processor this quality. I will seriously try one tonight with my gear........and will certainly post some demo songs when I get mine here to record in the studio.
