Chony, In my case the laptop is held in place by a couple Velco strips and never leaves the platform. You can turn the platform upside down and the laptop stays in place. And, as you can see the platform sits just over an inch above the top of the keyboard, but does not interfere with access to any of the keyboard's buttons. No stiff neck either. I have two of these On Stage 2nd Tiers. They are certainly rugged enough to hold even large keyboards. The only thing I don't like is that the height is set at approx 7.5 in between keyboards(depending on the height of the bottom one). The tilting arms are on ratchets(very secure),but run only about $30 and are universal.

Chony, You can put anything on the laptop platform, I-mac, laptop, female singer, bottles of booze, anything. It's extremely strong, versatile, and the price is right. Cheers, Gary
