....OK, how "old school" do I need to be before I'm no longer a "junior member?"

Hey... All I've got is the XV-88 and I am quite happy with it... except I will probably be getting some sort of midi sequencer eventually... maybe the Roland MC-50???? Anyway... OldSchool... try around 30 posts or so... that ought to do it.

I figured it was something as sophisticated and meaningful as that. I think this makes 12 or so. I'm feeling less "junior" every day. I can even go to the bathroom all by myself now! ;-)

As far as sequencers - I've manuscripted for so long it's hard to imagine constructing music any other way. My computer software just instantly connects writing to performance. Otherwise, I'm still writing the same as I did in graduate school back in 19-aught-whatever. (Of course, I couldn't play the stuff then either!)

In any case, if one has a computer, it'll do sequencing with cheap (even free) software - performance/recorded, or written. I guess the only downside (there may be others, but I'm completely ignorant on the subject) is that my dependence on computers dictates I bring a laptop to gigs.

Ah...there's another learning curve yet to be addressed!

ok, KEYBOARDFREAK, since you're the only one I've seen here having the XV-88 I need a little favor from you...the thing is that I can't reach to the categories BEATS & GROOVE and DRUMS, when using the Patch Finder Function, in Patch Mode. Please, use this method and try to select these categories and tell me what happened.
Thanks a lot, help me

For the one that has the XV88, the Beats & Groove, Drums category will only work if you have an expansion board that has that category on it. The XVs and XPs don't come stocked with those (Excpet for the XP30).

"Beat & Groove" are the patches that are loops, beat loops to be more specific. Examples are on the SRJV12 Hip-Hop Board and the SRJV11 Techno Board.

The "Drums" are drum menus. These are patches in which drum waveforms are assigned to the four tones and then key mapped to behave like a drum set. So "C2" will play a Bass Drum and "F#2" will play Hi-Hat.

The Bass & Drums, Hip-Hop, Techno and Session board all have these for example.

I hope I answered your question.

Hey! Well I got the Roland XP-30 which I reckon pound for pound is one of the best synths I have used! The sounds are absoutley brill specially with the fact that it has the 3 expansions cards and using it with the SBLive is a cool combo. Only thing I don't like is the expansion cards are a little bit overpriced.

OldSchool - Yeah.... I know you can sequence with a computer... and I do a little bit on here with a program called NoteWorthy Composer.... The only thing is I don't have a laptop and I don't have around $300 to spend on a used one right now(that's the cheapest I can find) The other thing I've though of is getting something that can play midi files so I can sequence on here and pop the disk in something up by my XV-88 to play them.... but then I can't sequence in real time. Oh well... I'll keep looking.

and then epu and akuma - does the XP-30 come with those three expansion boards as a standard thing... for $1000! Wow that is a steal.... comes out around $400 for the keyboard if you take into account the cost of the boards.

Oops... I forgot to ask this about the XP-30's exp. boards.... are those the only sound banks it has?? or does it have a preset internal bank as well?? also can you remove the exp. boards it comes with??

Hello, KF

The XP30 and the JV1010 have all the internal waves and preset patches from the JV2080 (banks A to E), and have additional ROM with the waves/patches from Session (JV1010) and Session, Orch I and Techno (XP30), but these sound are built in, and not in form of a expansion board, so you can't remove then. The JV1010 have 1 more expansion and the XP30 have two.

Okay... that makes sense. I had a thought rolling around in my head... something like this "Hey... maybe I can get a cheap XP-30 used, then take the exp. boards out and put 'em in my XV-88... and voila, tons of new sounds... for less than the price of the three exp. boards.... oh and look, now I've got a 61 key controller keyboard too.... awesome!!" Oh well.... it was just a thought.

Oops... I forgot.. only two SR-JV slots in the XV...
