The definition of a musician needs to be updated.

The old definition would include a DJ.

" A person who plays music."

The definition needs to be updated to:

"A person who plays an instrument"

If a "playback artist" that use the keyboard as midi and mp3 playback/karaoke machine
can be called a musician, then a DJ is too.
My grandson at 2 figured out where to press on a toy that play different melodies, so
he sure do prove he is a real musician.

Cheers and happy holidays.

If an actor portrays a part for a movie ...can the projectionist who shows the film be called an actor?

Not while functioning as a DJ. This would include standing behind a keyboard while playing an MP3 file.

You decide:

DJ= Disc Jockey

Disc Jockey (Dictionary.com definition):

–noun
1.
a person who conducts a radio broadcast consisting of recorded music, informal talk, commercial announcements, etc.

2.
a person who selects, plays, and announces records at a discotheque.

Musician (Dictionary.com definition):

–noun
1.
a person who makes music a profession, esp. as a performer of music.

2.
any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music.

DJ as a musician? No. But DJ as entertainer, absolutely yes, especially the really good ones.

My experience is that a lot of the really good DJs are former 'entertainers', i.e. musicians, vocalists, band members ... people who have had experience in front of audiences ...

Musicians have to know chord progressions on each song, regardless IF is an arranger keyboard, not just that, the arrangement, how to read a crowd, etc.

I used this example to educate and see the difference:

ANYBODY can learn how to play (use that CD/MP3 player and change songs, cross-fade, etc.) in about 15-20 minutes and perhaps put CDs-MP3s for the next 4 hours.

BUT, I am 100% sure that in 15-20 minutes NO one would learn to play a keyboard (even if it is an arranger), and much less to perform for 4 hours.
