I just watched one of the best '60 minutes' I've ever seen. It was mostly a Morley Saffer interview w/clips of jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsallis. Those parts shot in Cuba were inspirational. If you missed it, you missed a treat.

Thanks for putting up that clip. It covers a lot of what we have discussed here many times, concerning the joys of playing with other musicians. A good insight into the complexities of jazz and what it's like to be a real musician playing at a very high level. Russ, Tony; if you're reading this, check it out.

Choosing ANY sports broadcast over this piece or anything like it is a CRIME!

"The Arts are our collective human heritage".

That says it all!

Love my TIVO.
Saw the Wynton Marsallis interview and two ballgames. Didn't miss a thing. I enjoyed the interview and ONE of the ball games. Condolences to Drew Brees.

OMG, that sounds like something Yogi Berra might have said. Man oh man, I can't stop laughing. Did you REALLY mean to say that. Anyway, I've seen ads for 'Universal Remote Controls'. Now I know what that means.

Wow, you can't make this stuff up.

I accidentally recorded 60 minutes, after the football game. I watched the show and enjoyed it a lot. Sure are pretty girls in Cuba!
Anyway, trumpet was my first instrument and the first instrument I was ever PAID to play.
I was first chair in the All-state concert band in Oklahoma my sophomore year in high school. I wasn't able to participate after that because it conflicted with sports.
I'm not able to play trumpet much any more because of basketball injuries to my teeth.
My hero as a kid was Harry James!
...just more stuff you didn't need to know.

You should use the link provided by Steve, not the 'hulu' link.

chas ... thank you for bring that to our attention ...
I loved some of Marsalis' comments ... "I play 4th trumpet..." not a bad 4th trumpet player by ANY standard ... "I'm afraid of not playing good enough ... " no doubt this is what makes ANYONE great at what they do ... "The ARTS are our COLLECTIVE human heritage" ... so true ...
I think this is a 'must view' not just for every musician, but for people in general ... I loved watching those kids in Cuba get the thrill of their lives playing with that band ... and how about the fact that 60 Minutes did a piece on the bass player when he was just 14 years old !!! ...
Again, thank you, chas, and thank you Steve for the link ....

Tony, your post is spot on. I was impressed by the very same things that you were. And you're right; that was a human interest story, not just of interest to musicians. A lot to learn about human interaction and the power of music. It was inspiring just to see the unmitigated joy of those young musicians; something that's hard to duplicate outside of music. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.

I watched and enjoyed this piece when it was originally aired so thanks Chas for giving me the opportunity to appreciate this classic episode again. Wynton Marsallis is truly the torchbearer of jazz of our generation.

LOL ... after hearing Wynton Marsallis talk about how people in Cuba eat black beans and rice, just like lots of other people, tonight for dinner Lydia prepared baked haddock and one of the side dishes was "Zatarains New Orleans Style Black beans and Rice" ... thought that was a funny coincidence ...

In 1988 and again in 1990 I, along with other musicians were invited to Cuba to present concerts and workshops about what was going on musically in the US. This was a great time of colaboration. There are incredible musicians in Cuba and it was a privilege to play with them. In 1991 we brought a Cuban group, Kairos, to the US to tour in our area. To this day I still coorespond with these guys. This was all very meaningful to me as my dad's family is originally from Cuba.
