I use and recommend SaveVid. No download required as it works from within your web browser.
Simply paste the YouTube video address link into the URL field, click 'download video' and another window automatically pops up giving you the available saveable video format/quality options. Been using SaveVid for a long time and find it the most convenient web browser based YouTube video saver.

I am using the free youtube downloader. It works great and also allows you to download from a lot of other sites. The sites that it doesn't handle the free Real Player seems to fill most of the gap.
the youtube downloader has over 61,000,000 downloads which means you know it's going to be safe and works good.
I always download from cnet if possible to prevent malware.

The best and easiest way is YOuTubeDownload Helper, there is no better. It is integrated in the browser itself as an addon, there is no need for conversion or wait time, you open the video and there is a download button right there and even in different formats suck as .flv, .mpg and mp3.

The free Real Player version http://uk.real.com/realplayer/ integrates into IE, Firefox & Chrome, so that you just have to click the on-screen button to save it. You can also use the program to convert files.

I tried Scott's recommendation, and SaveVid works great, and depending on the original quality of the video, you have choices to save in various formats, including 1080HD.
