Hi Manuel,
maybe I've misunderstood something over the years as far as backups go, you sort of get set in your ways, and it might not be the best way of doing things. haahaa
I've always done a "Save All" which I believe doesn't save Factory Styles, therefore wouldn't save tweaked styles in those Factory Slots if I'd overwritten them?

OK, I bought my PA800 with the original Operating System. A few months later , they brought out Operation System 1.51. plus a Full Resources Upgrade. 1.51 introduced Guitar Mode . Quite a number of Factory Styles were upgraded to include Guitar Mode in the Resources part of the upgrade.
I'm guessing that the Resources Upgrade would have overwritten any tweaks or styles I'd saved in the Factory Slots? and if I then tried to load one of my old Back ups on top of 1.51 Resources upgrade, wouldn't that then overwrite the new Guitar Mode styles??
That's the main reason I've never overwitten a Factory Style. We had 2 Major upgrades ( plus a couple of minor ones in the 3 year period). One introduced Guitar Mode Styles( with upgraded styles) the second one introduced DNC voices plus 20 or so new styles)

Have I got this totally wrong as to what a back up actually does?

I've got a number of styles I'd happily overwrite, but would the work get wasted if Korg brought out another major upgrade.

Some of the stuff they upgraded for the PA800 over that 3 year period was brilliant, and all for free. They weren't just bug fixes, they were brand new functions.

Yes, is possible, I have done it in BOTH, the 500 and 800, actually, also in the 2X too. cool
Is very powerful to be able to also RE-VOICE the Factory Preset styles too, also change the STS=OTS in Yamaha lingo....

I perform most of the time on the T4, but, I do not let go my PA500, if I need a style, I make it on the PA 500, then I convert it for the Yamaha and is done.

In many cases is actually faster to make Backups depending on the case of the performer, and load-Restore them and by the way, I recommend NOT to use the Compress function, this makes it to load or save much slower. As an example, I most of the time play at Senior Dances, and a fewer times I play at some private parties, this for Mexican people.

The advantage of the Backup vs the SET, is that the Backup not only contains all the set data, but, like in my case, I have replaced many Factory styles that I never use, like Rap, House, etc....besides my Performances/Registrations, user Voices, on the Factory presets I have change the STS, etc......so, this is much powerful way to use the most potential on the keyboard, and I simply re-load/Restore my backup for the Ballroom or for the Mexican parties....and is done in few minutes.

I did show how to use this feature to a Croatian guy that plays on weddings and use lots of User voices, samples, plus most user styles and performances, to simply use this feature and is very handy, he customized to have 2 or 3 different Backups per set, when he finish a music set, just begins the Restore backup for the second set, and after he takes a small break while is loading, his PA800 is ready to keep the party going.

Hi Rikkis:

BACKUP=SET PLUS the user styles you may have replaced in the Factory locations Plus IF you have also change the STS/OTS on the Factory styles too, the backup does that, the set does not.

that is what the Backup saves besides all the things the SET does, and that is the difference between the SET vs Backup.

Assuming that you already have the latest OS and Musical resources, you could use the BACKUP as the MEGA-REGISTRATIONS bank.
This particular procedure, to me, seems much faster if you use lots of samples in User Voices, Drum Kits, very much like my friend from Croatia.
He particularly use the Backups as MEGA registration banks, that contain truly all his data for the kind of music he makes with all those samples in User voices, etc.
I use that too, because, I do not know if you ever got those messages when loading a SET, that the memory is full, well, that issue is gone if you load/restore your backup, the only thing you may have to do, is to turn the keyboard off and then on after the Backup have been restored.
cool

Thanks Manuel,
I didn't use samples much in the PA800, but I am starting to use them more & more with the PA3x.
So I'll definately look into using backups.
thank you

Rikki. Question please: Do the fills/buttons keep blinking and repeating when pressed twice like the 800? I sure hope so because this is such a useful feature.

Hi Zuki,
they sure do.
We've also got 4 fills now, which is a lot better than having just the 2. I luv the fact that the fills can be set to Auto, so they act like the Yammies ie hit a variation & you get the fill before the variation starts playing, or you can press a fill button and it acts as a fill in.. Or when Auto is set to OFF, you just use the same way as PA800.

I didn't think they could improve much on the PA800 ( I was very happy with it),but with PA3X, I'm REALLY happy. haahaa
