I've used AVG and AVAST. I got a free tune up from YOGI a few weeks ago. The TECH told me to remove AVAST and turn MSE back on. He said it was better. So, I've just been using "Advance Systems Care," and MSE.

What do you think? Anyone familiar with YOGI? They sure tried very hard to sell me their service. I told them that all of my money went to groceries and rent (which is true) and they still sounded like the old time door to door insurance salesman! Very hard to get rid of.

But if it's any help the latest edition of the uk pc magazine PC Pro reviews a number of anti-virus products, including MS Security Essentials, AVG and (I think, magazine not to hand) Avast. The conclusion was that of the free offerings AVG is the most complete but the the persistent nagging to buy one of their paid for products is somewhat annoying.

However I'm currently using MS security essentials purely because I got sick of the nagging from AVG!

John, I've been using the AVG free version for the past number of years, and have never been "nagged" to buy any of their products.

It's worked very well and is doing it's job as good as to be expected.

I first tried Norton, but it was way too aggressive, and needed updating, which wasn't free either.

Never tried Avast, but I can speak for great success with AVG.

clamwin is another free anti virus program, my wife uses it on her laptop and never has any problems, it updates itself in the background and sometime (maybe once a year) she has to download a new version.

I've used AVG for years. No problems, occasional sales pitch, but not extreme.

AVG Free works great for me, never had a single problem in nearly a decade. Advanced System Care Free is also a great program and really cleans up a lot of junk in the PC. No need to buy anything--just keep payin' the rent and grocery bills.

The best, written by the company the company themselves? Microsoft Security Essentials...free, free auto updates...and it has the SMALLEST OS footprint of any of them...Have a good look at it...and in most of the mag tests out here it performs right up there with the so-called "heavyweights"

IMHO if you are referring to iYOGI, I would stay clear of them. They have you download some kind of app that will supposedly scan your computer and then a chat window will open, and the pressure begins. In fact the download dialog box opens the second you click on the site. Again, IMO too aggressive to trust.

All you need is one of the free anti-virus programs mentioned, C-Cleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, maybe SuperAntiSpyware, all free.
That's it.

Boo, I use avast, no problems at all.

I read somewhere that while MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) is good it is recommended that it be combined with AdAware. Not all updates were automatic. I didn't have problems, but I found the manual updates to be bothersome. I went back to AVG Free.

Also...there is a virus out there that is called Microsoft Security Essential. A client of mine had it on their machine and it was a bugger to get rid of. I don't know where it came from but if you want MSE be sure you validate that it is the bonafide program.

Too !?!? right, it patches itself into the execute stack so that it re-enables itself whenever you run ANY executable. I fixed it by booting off a CD and running AntiMalwareBytes, there's some good advice on the internet.

It calls itself "Microsoft xx Security Essentials yyyy" where XX is your current windows version and yyyy is the year after this one.

It presents a very convincing replica of the normal Windows security page, on the particular version I was eradicating there was one spelling mistake to give the game away.

When online I presume that anything that tells you instantly that your computer has an infection must be malicious - think how long it takes your onboard virus scanner to do the same job!

That is exactly what I am talking about and Malwarebytes found the MSE copycat (in name only) virus. Between RKillDownload and restoring 6 registry changes, the problem was irradiated.

Been using AVG free for many years, never any problems, never any virusses. Just dont let them lure you intoo buying their full product, they keep trying.

Has anyone actually bought the full version? I may just in appreciation for all the years of using the free version.

I'm using AVG on three computers. Two on Win7 and one XP. AVG on one of the Win7's continually recommends a "restart".
Restarting does not eliminate the recommendation. Otherwise, it appears to work as it is supposed to.

I use Avast on three computers, 1 xp and 2 win7. Free, no nag screens and works and updates automatically.

Thanks for all of the info. MSE came on my Laptop. When I run it manually, it says the last time it ran was Sunday at 2AM. I think it runs every Sunday morning at that time. So, it is quitely running in the background.

MSE does seem to take quite a bit longer to do "it's thing" then both Avast and AVG took. I have used both AVG and Avast each for a few years in the past and both worked fine. I quit AVG which was the first one that I used because a few years back I got a notice that said that they "would not be upgrading the free version any more." So, I switched to Avast and ran it for the last couple of years with no trouble.

Some how I got connected with "YOGI" and after seeing they wern't going to get me to subscribe to their service, they offered to help for free. They got me straightened up and then tried to get me to subscribe again. They then told me to delete the malware, spyware, Avast etc and run the Advance System Care, and to turn on MSE. They said MSE was already on my laptop, it was free and was rated as good as any antivirus.

I will stay away from "YOGI" as they are hard to get rid of after they help you.

Me too. The last time my computer guy came in and fixed a problem for me, he recommended MSE and set it all up. No problems at all.
