ok, unless you live on another planet, I'm guessing most of you already know that Apple just announced yesterday (here in San Francisco), their latest newest iPad 3 model.
As a longtime fanboy of the original iPad 1, I just took the plunge and pre-ordered the 64 Gb model Apple iPad 3, with WiFi + 4G LTE (Verizon data carrier).
Though I still love & use my iPad 1st gen 'every day' for:
Web browsing, email, Contacts, Calendar Video & Voice Tel. Calls & IM (Skype) Media Consumption: streaming TV shows & news, movies, YouTube Word Processing, Spreadsheets Graphics & Photo Editing Apps & Display Music Production & Music Display Apps Games Galore
Though I passed on the iPad 2, I now decided to take the plunge and upgrade to iPad 3 to gain its awesome new double the HD resolution screen, as well as Ipad 3's new much improved 5MP camera and the iPad 3's 4G LTE speed, which is already widely available in my area. I realize that the price of admission is a bit more than other tablet competitors, and that the iPad continues to lack expandable storage , and Siri software (included on the iPhone 4S) , but where Apples RULES is in the quality & vast number of apps, and simple yet elegant form and function creating an extremely satisfying OS experience, and above all, Apple's renowned build build quality & reliability (I never experienced a problem with my iPad 1).
Mine is scheduled to be delivered next Friday. I'm really excited. I'll post my first hand feedback once I've had a chance to explore it a little.
That rocks! This tablet looks like a real winner. Incredible screen, immense processing power. I'm sure there will be a lot more new apps taking advantage of it's new features. Yeah, the lack of connectivity and expandable storage is a drag, but ... c'est la vie.

With "dropbox" and other programs and "iSwifter" to access flash players sites - there is NO down side to this piece. The Apple is the way to go, and the clarity on this new screen is amazing. It's like putting your glasses ON. Good luck Scott - I love my iPad2 - you're gonna love this new one. I bought the iKlip holder for a mic stand and really don't need it - yours for $3o shipped if you want it. Brand new - never took it to work. Dave

I'm in the market to buy another laptop for my wife....Could someone tell me why I need an iPad3 vs a laptop for her?..living in a rural area free WiFi is not all that accessible for iPad use......does that mean you have to pay for service like your cell phones? or?.. also ... I already have a iPhone 4s so why do I need this iPad3....
and the final questions can you use a mouse with the ipad3 as my lady hates a touch screen. and do you always have to hold this thing, do they make a stand for it?

Here is my take on the ipad or any comparable tablet... they do not compete with a quality laptop...period..
Most of the time , they are novelties..apps are part time programs compared to full feature programs that run on laptops..Tablets lack the processing power found on laptops..
The touch screen is the only feature worth mentioning , compared to laptops...and you can get a touch screen on a laptop, if that floats your boat..
The real keypad on a laptop is much better than virtual keypads, and the size difference is not worth the compromise..
Donny you could use your iphone linked (tethered) to your "new" ipad3...for internet service......or wait another 6 months to see what Apple will piecemeal out to the public in another all new wonder....
Over priced and over valued..
BTW" I have a tablet too...7 inch screen with 250 gigs and USB....things I wanted , that were not available on the then current ipad...
If you need new toys the ipad3 qualifies....if you need real processing tools..get a laptop..(a good one)..

Good info...After reading and talking to many people I will probably buy her a TOTL laptop like your Toshiba......makes more sense for her needs ...iPad3 etc, seems to have a certain Niche market.

iPads are cool...popular...and I am seeing more business people using them. I also have seen iPad users who purchased special covers to protect the screen, stands to position them on tables and desks and conventional keyboards they connected to them because they didn't care for the virtual key pad. It looks to me that they just converted their iPad into a laptop, albeit, at a higher cost and with fewer computing capabilities.
Nothing wrong with that. I just found it humorous.

exactly Eddie very valid points...Thanx I've been reading up on both pros & cons.....

I agree. If someone said you can have either an iPad or a good laptop I'd opt for the laptop due to the nature of my work.
On the subject of the novelty of the iPad, for me it's not a novelty. I've dropped all paper subscriptions to newspapers and magazines because they are delivered digitally to my iPad. I no longer have to carry multiple binders to gigs with lead sheets, they are all stored in my iPad. When we travel my wife and I watch movies in-flight.
I do dabble in photography and there isn't really a better way to display some of the work I've done. I'm also able to print docs on the fly wirelessly as well, very handy.
Not all is novelty but for the average Joe or Jane it can be.

Can you and wife watch a movie simultaneously?
Bill, yes I have a Y-splitter that allow 2 sets of earphones to be plugged into the iPad, we lower the tray table and prop the ipad up in it's case.

Stephen, what I am referring to mostly...are the apps that just touch on certain programs, and do not suffice the user that was expecting more...."Garage band" app is a perfect example...the $5 app is more like "garbage band" compared to the more expensive, but usable program..
Sure the new ipad looks great..screen etc...they could have had this last year or two generations ago...they are milking the consumer...in some areas they still are catching up to the competition..
Hope you understand my "novelty" words a little better....
Deane nice setup....personally I don't use charts at all or lyrics 95% of the time ....but my laptop easily can show them via note pad or word if needed...& without a keyboard & Multitasking different programs simultaneously (I usually keep at least three programs open) for My needs on stage iPad is a deal breaker for me.

Another thing to consider...damage from dropping...since mostly hand held, they are subject to drops...second only to the cell phone....just ahead of Yamaha PSR keyboards ..and DonM E-80...

There are some serious music apps for the current iPad series. Most of them were for guitar players but take a look at this current music system app featuring some top notch plugins and 4 track recording

Donny, I tested an apple wireless mouse with the iPad and it was a breeze to use via bluetooth. Garage band work VERY well, even though it's a light version ... hey, it's FIVE dollars. I use iRig midi hardware to access the tones in garage band to play live and there is no lag and great flexibility. With so much at your fingertips, it's a fast work tool. Powers up faster than a laptop, takes less desktop space - can organize, print and email files and docs just like the big boys ..... it's a "post pc" world ahead according to apple R&D, and I agree. I haven't needed my laptop in over a year. I even LIKE typing on the flat screen!

Hey Buddy, I pre-Ordered the White 64gb 4GLTE for AT&T. I'm still grandfathered in under the unlimited 3g plan from right before it ended 2 years ago. So for me only 30 bucks for unlimited. Call me at some point. i have some good info to pass on to u regarding this new beast.

Thanks Steve, Mikey, et al for the congratulations. Mike, welcome aboard the iPad 3 owners club. I gotta admit I'm pretty psyched about getting mine next Friday (3/16) and anxious to compare it with my current iPad 1 to confirm whether it was worth the upgrade investment or not. I'm pretty confidenet it is, esp with the improved camera (both still pics & HD Video too) :cool) resolution (iPad 1 doesn't even include a camera) and the huge jump in HD screen resolution (sharpness). as well as it's claimed blazing 4G LTE speed making near broadband speed available to me just about anywhere I go. I also looking forward to having full featured live GPS navigation on the larger iPad screen as well, making it far easier to view and navigate it and all other iPad apps than on my iPod Touch or Android Smartphone.

Ditto to That ! This is what the magic of the iPad is about. It meets all my everyday computing needs, conveniently watching the Network morning News while shaving in the bathroom, and the evening news in bed before retiring, easily reading SZ several times a day on the run (in a restaurant, lunch at the park, or a break before/after a gig, without having to strain my eyes viewing my smaller smartphone device(s). I appreciate being able to do so much of everything I want to do on what I would consider an ideal sized screen & slim device that is so easy to take everywhere I go. The laptop era is moving behind us now, with tablets taking over, and it's clear to me that Apple remains the tablet manufacturer leader into the near 2013 future.

Good suggestions. Here are 5 popular FLASH Player/Browsers for iPad. Yep, it's nice that 3rd party developers have found a way for iPad/iPhone owners to view Flash videos now. My personal fav flash browser currently is Photon.

Thanks for the offer, but I already have the same one too, but I never even took mine out of the box (so I'm offering my iKlip for sale (same price) to anyone here too), because my iPad can be more conveniently & quickly placed in front on my Tyros 4 screen, and lifted off with one hand, utilizing a discreet adjustable plastic coated holder. See this thread for more details.
Hi Scott, wow, that sounds awesome. Bet you can't wait. Lent my little ipod to my son so he could load some of his music on it for me, can't beleive how much I"ve missed it this week, apps for everthing from ebay, to skype to using it as a remote control for our TBox. Can do a lot with it, but such a tiny screen. I'm really & truly ENVIOUS. haahaa

Rikki: I'm equally envious back over your most impressive TOTL Korg Pa3X ! , as because of my newest iPad 3 purchase, I'll now have to postpone getting a Pa3X a while longer now than I had orginally planned. I feel fortunate to own both the Yamaha Tyros 4 , and such a budget priced Korg microARRANGER, which is still keeping me very content on the musical keyboard side of things. - Scott
Not knocking your purchase, I'm just pointing out the fact that I'm typing this message on a Acer W500 Windows 7 Tablet PC. It cost me less than an iPad and it does everything a PC can which is infinitely more than an iPad could ever do.
Apple have a rough time ahead of them. Windows 8 will be the cause of that.

James, that is going to prove to be an interesting horse race if you will. Apple in general and the iPad versus Windows 8. Apple has so much cash at hand makes you wonder who will win the marketing game, but with such a commanding lead now in the tablet market, not so sure anyone is up to the challenge. Of course with Steve gone now that could be a game changer

James first off...how you doing?....secondly, thanx for the info on the Acer W500 tablet I'll be looking into it as an alternative to my laptop as now I realize although very popular the iPad isn't for my needs.

Yeah doing goood... just been very busy so I haven't been around much.

No problem. At least with Windows you can do whatever you want and connect whatever you want to it. No fuss.

Thank you James....little by little I'm seeing all the advantages of a windows based tablet.... stay well!
It will all make much more sense when you see Windows 8.
Windows 7 on my Tablet is using the Surface Touch Screen Expansion software so it just makes normal Windows 7 very simply to use from a Touch Screen. Windows 8 is designed from the ground up for Touch Screen operation and the interface is very different.
I've already tired to install the beta on my W500. It's VERY slick.

Yep, and he made sure to 'point that out' in his video. Considering that, I still think 'Soldier Knows Best' presented a well reasoned & balanced iPad 3 "Good or Bad" assessment.

James what is the battery life of the Acer before a charge is needed? I don't think anyone can beat Apple's 10 hrs.
Nice to have competition in the Tablet World, actually surprised there isn't more quality tablets to choose from. Prices are high, but they keep on selling, so....

10 hours...I wish my android would get 10 hours...I wish it would get 5 hours...I wish it would get 3 hours..
I do keep bright screen on ..all the time and it does have 250g drive...so I will have to settle on under 3 hours...I would never gig with it...without plugging in AC adapter..
fwiw, I had an iPad 1, sold it went to the Acer W500 W7 version, and yes it does do what James says it does...nowhere near the display clarity when using on stage as the iPad, evn less so than on iPad2...plus with teh "add-on" touch driver, I found it quite laggy in response when using in real-time on stage.
I may go back IF there is any performing software for PDF charts that is better than Music Reader (VERY clunky and glitchy compared to the iPad apps). And MR seems to be the ONLY app for Windows that actually is more than a glorified PDF reader..Whereas with the iPad there are perhaps 20 really GOOD ones.....
Fran, I get 10.35 hours from a full charged iPad 2, tested and confirmed (MAX I got from the 1, was 8.95)...I have display at 80% which on the iPad you still almost need sunnies..it is that bright....imagery is so crystal clear..
I can FULLY understand anyone with an iPAD 1 going to the 3, but for mine, it is not worth the effort to go from 2 to 3. I will wait for 4.. Essentially the only difference is the inclusion of the Retina display...and I have looked at really HIGH res images of comparisons, and yes it is better on iPad 3 -v- 2, but only marginally...
And yes it DOES come with a bigger processor, but ALL the benefits of that are used up in powering the new display...Speed of apps, and redraws etc etc, are all pretty much on par with the 2.
No better battery life, as the new quad processor and Retina display take up what additional life WOULD have been available from the supposedly improved battery on the iPad 3.
And there MAY be charts somewhere that "spin" the i3 specs, but THEY are achieved using highly sensitive "digital" testing procedures... and a few milliseconds, in real term usage NO-ONE will even see...they may IMAGINE they see it simply because the Apple marketing says so.....
So for me...the iPad 3 is SO close to the iPad 2 as to be not really worth it...
I, like James, am waiting on the full release of W8..which REALLY looks the biz....and if it IS, and MS develop a webstore with similar pricing policies to Apple....well I think Apple will THEN have a battle on it's hands, and Android will go the way of the Dodo!!
Dennis
PS: I really should do up a video demo of my iPad 2 using Unreal book, automatically selecting ANY one of 9999 songbook listings on the PA2xPro, the second I select the chart on the Ipad!!!
Talk about the IDEAL tool setup for live performance...at any gig at the touch of a button, I have not only the correct chart loaded, but also the fully setup PA2 just waiting to play it form the Song Book library listing of 9,999 entries...whether it be a style, backing mp3, or backing midi...complete with all live play sounds and vocal setups fully loaded...takes about, oh .5 of a second!!!! And ALL controlled by simply selecting a chart listing on the iPad...Sweet!!!!

Thanks Rico. I'm really excited. I esp look foward to trying out 'remote' video Skype on the iPad making it possible to voice and/or video Skype with Sz friends from "any place" with WiFi or 4G LTE, and @ fast broadband speeds, and this includes the entire region (San Francisco Bay Area) where I live.
I Just checked my new iPad 3 online order, and it shows mine's already on its way to me with FedEx tracking showing it in Ontario, California now and scheduled for delivery to me on the official iPad launch day: this Friday (3/16th). I admit I haven't been this excited since I ordered my Tyros 4.
btw: I've justed learned that all new iPad pre-orders are now completely sold out, and that all new orders placed today will now take 2-3 weeks to ship.

About 6 hours for general surfing the net. If you run heavy applications or watching 1080p movies you will get a little over 4 hours.

I just read what I'd consider a very good and objective Cnet article which might help people decide whether purchasing (for the first time, or upgrading to) the new Apple iPad would be the "right fit" for you or not.

Dennis, Yes, please do a video demo very impressive by your description.
I also would be very interested to hear what can be done here. My main question is can I use this function using pdf lead sheets with ipad and Korg? Wonder if this would work in any fashion on a Tyros 4? Do you know which Korg models this will work on? Where can I get info about this type of usage?
Works on all Korgs as it is an intrinsic part of the OS...Details are in the manuals. Page 179 of the PA2 Manual, 161 of the PA3 manual and just look in the Songbook reference section for the other manuals as I do not have them to double check exact page numbers.
There is even a very small free applet that does it for you, PAsCO. Can be d/l from Yolasite website
Which creates the very small midi file needed to select a songbook entry. All that needs to be done is link this midi to a chart in the iPad app...
I use Unrealbook as it is one of the VERY few iPad chart (PDF) reading apps that allows the linking of these midi files. It cannot play "full" midi files as it is not specifically a midi player as such, but it can send these as it is a one bar entry only and requires no timing pulses or clock references.

Dennis, Yes, please do a video demo very impressive by your description.
Hi Stephen,
No worries m8, I am about to upload one...I will make it a new thread though, as it really does not relate directly to this one
