Hello everyone, I would like to get anyones opinion and experiences on this question. What do you use as a seat, how long do you play, is it comfortable etc. I am looking at the roc n soc lunar, does anyone have any experience with that seat.

I use a Quick Loc D-749, which is fully adjustable and folds flat for transportation. I modified the seat by enlarging the seat area by 3-inches in all directions, then changed the cushion to 4-inch thick, close-cell foam.

Mapex Throne

I used the Quik Lok Gary has, then moved to the current Roc-n-soc with lift. I recently sat in a Mapex guitar throne at G.C. Loved it- nice smaller but thicker back pad positioned forward more than the r-n-s.

Sparky,

How would you fold it up for transporting? It appears as if only the legs collapse. At my age, I'm always looking for comfort, but I also look for something that is easily transported.

Gary cool

be careful with the Mapex/Tama style Drum thrones,...yea it feels nice in the store when you FIRST sit in it as I thought so also when I bought one,.. BUT,......after gig after gig in the seat for 4 or eight hours at a time your "genitalia" will take a Big Toll due to the crotch HUMP intended to keep a "Drummer" in place while playing....as when your playing keyboard one tends to keep slipping forward putting pressure on the "COHONES" surprised especially in HOT Weather when sweat will also agitate the crotch areas wink On top of that they weigh a ton to carry around and awkward to transport, stack on a kart, etc,.. also.

With my r-n-s, the legs collapse, the seat comes off, and the backrest slides out from under the seat. When i had the ql, i cut some of the "excess" top off of the rail that the backrest slides on to- it was too long and heavy.

all that work for just a seat !!! thats why I eliminated the seat completely from my rig.... I like to sit very low in the seat and have no problem using whatever chairs they have available at the GIG.....I do however carry a nice foam seat cushion just in case of a thin metal folding chair....
LESS gear will travel YEAH!! cool2

I use a kind of seat that I believe is made for pedal-steel players, the guy that referred me to the maker of it called it a Pac-a-Seat (or Pack-a-Seat) ... it's a seat that has a storage compartment as part of it - very handy. I've used this for ~10-12 years, maybe more. It's basically a recangular box with its "lid" being the seat - with nice padding on it. The legs fold in, so you carry it like a small suitcase. Mine has 4 compartments in it and I carry my smaller items - shorter cables, mic, adapters, flashlight, etc. I just set it up at the gig, open up the 'lid', take out the pieces I need to set up my rig, then close the lid and "have a seat" and play! I can't remebmer who made it ... it was a smaller 'custom' kind of shop, again I believe he/they made stuff for pedal steel players. It is a fixed height, but I did some testing ahead of time, and it was a perfect height for me (and was a good height when I used to play MIDI organ-style pedals along with my keybaords).

I still find it curious, as hard as many of us resist buying arrangers that are heavier than feathers, many of us will happily tote a seat around that weighs as much or more!

My Quick Lock D-749 seat tips the scales at 17.8-pounds. Even an old fart like myself can handle that. wink

The fixed height is more of a problem.

Generally, if you place your arranger's action at pretty much the same height as a piano's, get a seat, stool or bench at piano seat height, you are sitting in what has been determined as the best, most ergonomic position for good comfort for at least a hundred years or more.

Either raising or lowering the position will tend to put your wrists in a less than relaxed angle, leading to quicker fatigue or reduced speed of motion. You can raise or lower BOTH together, and you will still be OK in this department, but you start to get into problems of the seat edge either failing to support your upper legs correctly or even worse, cutting into them and messing with circulation.

It's sort of hard to argue with a couple of centuries' experience, in this regard...

The suggested position is to have your feet resting flat upon the floor, forarms and thighs perpendicular to the floor, your upper arms and calves at or near vertical, and your back vertical. At least that's what I've read, and was taught by my piano teacher.
