Are you getting a digital piano, Donny? Are you planning on using it at home as a controller, or just to play some piano pieces?

For me, my 88 key Kronos falls in the portable cattegory, dont think your defenition would count a 50 lbs Kronos X 88 as being portable. But the hammer key action and the piano sound(both onboard as custom samples) are near to perfect for me... Only that part warrants the 2400 euros i payed for it on Ebay. And there is so much to love on top of that...

76 keys and light & thin as possible approx 20lbs for example the size of a Yamaha NP31 etc,etc,..

No problem I know that just wanted some opinions of owners who have different models at home...a simple request.

The casio px-5s is only 24 pounds ... But its 88 weighted keys, maybe there is a 76 version of it, but it has remarkable good action and very good piano sounds

I think Roland RD 64 is good, but unfortunately it only has 64 keys and no on-board loudspeakers.
Roland RD 300 is not too heavy, but again no loudspeakers.
(Yamaha NP 31 is nearly non-weighted, I guess you know that.)

I recently got a Yamaha CP4. I had a RD 700 NX and later a CP5, but I like the CP4 best. It is relatively light weight, incredible samples from 3 Yamaha grand pianos, good extra voices, easy to use and add a layer or split, and a real wood keyboard that feels terrific if you want to feel like you are playing on a real grand piano. And it costs less than the CP5 did- Yamaha did a nice job with this and it will be a keeper for me for a long time.

The Roland models all have 128 voices polyphony, so I can't imagine you'll have any dropouts.
I forgot the Roland FP-50, it obviously has got speakers:

But like the RD300NX, it's quite heavy (around 17 kilograms).

Layered sounds, two hands and frequent use of the sustain pedal can eat up 128 voices in no time. Some handle dropouts better than others, but if you're playing 2 handed piano with sustain, I'd suggest as much polyphony as possible.

The Casio Privia I played yesterday had 256 no drop at all layers etc,...nice unit.

You beat me to it, you tried the Casio. I think the PX350 is your best bet. Great keyboard feel and sounds, plenty of polyphony, on board speakers and a basic arranger unit for that sketchpad work at home. 1/4" stereo outs and ins.
I never use the onboard speakers but if I brought the piano into the house from my studio they would be useful.

the Casio px 5s the best in the under 1,000.00 it has a 25 second decay it is very good light weight and feel very good you cant go wrong with that one.

I don't think it happens so quickly. I used to accompany a classical soloist with a MoX, which only has 64 voices. The only time I had dropouts was when I used three multi-element parts at a time: piano + large strings + woodwinds.
Consider the Yamaha NP 31 (only a keyboard in "piano style, I know) has a polyphony of 32(!) voices. I would be totally unplayable if 128 voices were still scarce.

Go the Casio. It is the new 5 s unit it is white it sounds great and has good decay I tested it the sample rings for over 25 seconds with holding down sustain ped this is a good way to find out how much depth the sample has Best vale and sound in it class by far I had Rd series from roland this will blow it away And good other synth sounds as well and it works as a controller as well. You won't be disappointed with this unit. If I was in market for stage piano this is the one I buy all the way list 999.00

it a good choice as well Donny the Casio a bit more and can do a lot more but you got the s 950 you can Midi both together they work very well together it will be a nice combo .

Donny, the P-105 is a great choice if you don't need dedicated midi ports.
I went with the Yamaha P-95 as it has dedicated midi in/out ports and is not USB based.

It has basically the same action as the P-105.

I use the P-95 with the Tyros4 (mainly to play solo piano using T4's sounds) and to control some synth modules in my friend's studio.

Ron, the Casio PX-5S is high on my list for next year.

I have no intention of using it "connected" to another KB so no concern there,....just a studio 88 scratch pad to keep here to work out projects, write songs, rehearse, etc,...
I think it will be just fine for my needs.

I'm still waiting for delivery of the P-105 today............

Back on topic... I'd say, first of all decide what REAL piano sound you like best, then go look for a digital that approximates it.

Pianos are as varied as guitars, no two sound alike, no two feel alike. I feel far too many people go buy a digital piano before they have familiarized themselves (or reacquainted themselves) with the real thing. Spend an afternoon on the real thing, the best you can lay your hands on, THEN go play the digitals... You'd be amazed how different the two can be.

Me, I like to hear a nice warm sound in the ppp to mf range, something that, IMO, few digitals really capture. EQ doesn't cut it, it has to be in the samples.

Good choice, Donny...a very nice piano indeed. The P-95 I sometimes use has a very similar action and is a real joy to play.
