Steve, Donny's only 2-1/2 hours up the road, and despite all the sailing trips and great meals he has been offered during the past couple years, I can't seem to lure him out of New Jersey. I would sail the boat up there, but the back bays are too shallow for my boat and those inlets are nasty when the tide's running out. Gary

Good lookin' rig, Steve. Too many wires on the floor, though. If you ever get down this far, you should take a close look at my custom built console. Plus, we could go sailing and drink some Green Coconut Margarettas, steam some crabs, and burn some fillet mignon on the boat's gas grill. It's a tough life down here during the warmer months. Gary

Thing is, how much do you TRUST these things? If you rely on a chart or lyrics, and would be hard pressed to gig without them, do you want to trust something that might crash, battery die, or get stolen (iPads and iPhones are some of the most stolen items nowadays)?
My needed charts and lyrics sit in a ring binder in plastic protector sheets, and have survived rain and drinks, and will probably still be 'working' long after the iPad is history!
My SMF's often have the lyrics synced, so I rarely use it, but I never go to a gig without it in case the SMF don't work!
As a side note, be careful of committing important data to electronics... We will probably know more about the Egyptians and the pyramids in a couple of hundred years than we will know about LAST 50 years or so. So many of our historical and government records are being stored electronically, on data systems that get obsolete REAL quick. There's a ton of stuff on tape, a ton of stuff on those old huge 12" optical disks, and very few players left working well.
But clay tablets and papyrus lasts FOREVER!

I posted this on another thread a while ago... I have four ring binders with the tunes that are difficult to play without music, or at least referring to it occasionally while playing, more of a crutch than anything. If I have the music in front of me, i could probably play through without looking...but if it ain't there...trouble. Using ring binders allows me to easily change out or add to the contents. They weigh a total of 10 lbs., and I have them in a soft case with a handle...basically an old small keyboard gig bag. The Test: A friend of mine at a gig (accidentally) dropped his electronic music pad thingy on the concrete floor...it did not work afterwards. I took one of my music binders, and (purposely) dropped it on the floor right next to where his fell...it worked afterwards. Winner? Music binder. My friend did not appreciate the contest at all. He said the floor under my music binder was likely made of softer concrete. I let him look over my shoulder and read my book for the rest of the gig. Sometimes the old ways are better. Ian

I have a couple dozen fake books for sale here too. I put all my lyrics on the laptop, then copied the files to the USB drive of the keyboard. I would be in serious trouble if both suddenly dropped dead, but in two decades of performing with a keyboard I've never had a complete failure, or even a keyboard hiccup for that matter. And, in 40 years of using PCs, never had a complete failure - NEVER! Guess I must be doing something right. Or, maybe I'm just damned lucky. But if it were luck, I would have hit that half-billion powerball ticket the other night and would be looking at a new sailing yacht today in Miami. Gary

I'm one of these guys that is slow to embrace most new technology. It's not that I can't figure it out...I could program a DX-7 where many of my colleagues couldn't figure it out at all. Yet, the funny thing was, I fought hard against getting one, because I liked the old analog so much better...still do. I only got a computer shortly before I joined SZ, and only then when my Yamaha boss at the time sent me his old laptop. But, once on the Internet and after some serious screw ups and reloading the OS a few times, I eventually caught on, and now I couldn't be without my PC. I don't even have a television or cable; all my entertainment and correspondence is with the PC. I have no desire to get an I-Pad, or I-phone...I don't own a cell phone of any kind. All my years with Yamaha I survived without one...I liked it because I could hide. I don't have an answering machine, but I do have call display, so I know if someone important called...most reach me through email or Skype. Someone at the bank (who often make promotional calls to clients) said to me, "Mr. MacNeill...you never answer your phone."...I replied, "Well it is MY phone!" I like my life to be casual, and, for the most part of it, it is that way, but it does require learning to say, "No" at the right times. This was especially important after I retired. Many people don't understand, but the important thing is, I do. Life is meant to be sipped...not gulped. There, my little bit of philosophy sharing for the day...ha ha! Ian the Indolent
