I'm talking Lyrics, Rhythm, Feeling, Dynamics and overall Musicianship. Try getting a band together and doing this tune. We did it pretty close for one tenoe, very good organist. very good drummer singing bass player who had the gravel voice to pull this over, and one of the best guitar players who ever lived in New Orleans Sonny Robicheaux. I'm not bragging, I just relating how lucky I was in the day to play with some super players of the time.

I always liked the bass runs with this song, nice subtle changes that flowed so smoothly.

Play this EVERY NIGHT since I first heard it in 1970. Also do God Bless the Child, although my version is more like a Luther V. arrangement or one by any of the many who recorded it.

Like Blood Sweat and Tears better than Chicago because there's usually a way for a single to pull their songs off.

There were lots of jazz oriented or influenced tunes in the early 70's that were major successes.

Pop sort of "dumbed down" after that, although there are little gems from every year thereafter.

I'm thinking "Green Eyed Lady", Stevie Wonder (lots of stuff), "Easy to be Hard" (Three Dog Night), "I Love You More Today than Yesterday"....lots of quality material among the "BUBBLEGUM".

"You Made Me So Very Happy" and Blood Sweat and Tears are certainly at the top of my list.

DNJ back then I only had to do the horn licks. Don't know where to start on the arranger. LOL

Donny get us a good midi like, "Born To Lose," and "Georgia," eh?

"A midi" is commonly used instead of Standard Midi File (SMF) or a Midi recording.

Like the word "gig", it's usage tends to increase in direct proportion to the hipness of the player.

All kiddin' aside, Russ, the late great Oscar Peterson often referred to the recordings he did on his Yamaha 9000 Pro as "midis" or "his midis".

I was lucky enough to be the one working with him to help him get familiar with the new instrument.

So, perhaps it really is in direct proportion to the hipness of the player...they didn't get much hipper than Oscar!

I love Ian as much DonM, Cavanaugh, Gary and DNJ!!! But not as much as Susan. If I don't cut this out DonM will give her to me and then I'll have to two most wonderful ladies on the planet.

I once made a mistake in my grammar, but I seen it as soon as I done it.

Bill, the Tower of Power song is really neat for different reasons. Not much in terms of structure as was the Blood, Sweat and Tears song, but heavy with feeling.

Good Call!

Russ, Thank you kindly for your so eloquent explanation between the two different groups of musicians. I get folks that try to explain to me that the Beatles and James Taylor are better musicians than Ray Charles because they sold more records. I got news for those folks, If they sold the most recording they are nowhere near the greatest musicians. For the most part the greatest musicians are the poorest musicians on Earth. LOL Why is this so hard for so many to understand this.
