I LOVE new technology, in fact, during my 'business' career I was fortunate enough to be on the cutting edge of the initial transition from big, old, IBM tabulating machines to computers and stayed on that road helping the company I worked for implement the latest technological advances ... BUT - how many GADGETS do we NEED?!?!? And OF COURSE, people will buy these things whether they can afford them or not, just because they are there!!!
- receiving messages during a meeting withouth anyone noticing - as gps during a bikeride - while sporting - quick look at the weather.. - making phone calls
With smartphones growing larger and larger, we needed a smaller device for the basics.. Its called innovation...
And wearables have been predicted long time ago, need i say " beem me up Scotty ". Its just the natural, flow of innovation...
It will have its uses... But this will be nothing more then an extension of you mobile computer ( the ones we call smartphones)

I remember the old 1950's comics (newspaper and books) that featured Dick Tracy and his "two-way wrist-radio", later replaced by a "two way wrist television", which eventually included a computer.
I still enjoy watching the old serials of the show, and many from the 30's are available on YouTube.
When I took Fortran in college, each line had to be typed on an individual punch card on a telo-type machine. You had to wait to get a machine.
You would place your 300 cards in cue to be sent to a central processor in mid-state. You would return several hours later to pick up your printout, and find you had a syntex error in the first card.
During mid terms I ran out of cards on the weekend, and searched frantically for someone that sold them. One response I got was "We don't carry punch cards or Buggy Whips anymore."
Still waiting for the day I can use Fortran in my life.
Best part... all this new stuff will be ancient in a few years also!!
Not really, i think the apple watch and other watches are here to stay.. If you wait for the 2nd or 3rd edition of this watch, it will last you atleast 10 years by my prediction...
Smartwatches belong in the same line as -radio -tv -homecomputer - laptop - -e reader - tablet - telephone + ipod - smartphone
All this functionallity is still around... Smartwatches will be the communication part of our devices
