Hi everyone,
Question for you guys....
Do you typically use the OTS or STS settings in the style as is...or do you make your one OTS or STS and save it with the style or songbook entry??

I guess I am asking are the OTS/STS usually great for the style or not.

This is an important question as I work with vA2.
Thanks,
Lee

Some are good, some are so-so on Korg. Yamahas are better, as I remember. I use the Performances for storing my favorite lead sounds. I don't use them to change anything else. When I find an STS setting I really like I store it in a Performance.
I use the Songbook for everything else, including storing custom STS settings when appropriate, or when I take time to do it.

Lee,

I try to set up my OTS in a familiar pattern, since I also only use one basic registration bank. Generally, my OTS is usually set up with OTS-1 being some sort of piano/electric sound, OTS-2 will have some type of Guitar sound, the OTS-3 will have some kind of a wind instrument sound (Trumpet, Sax, Flute) and OTS-4 will have an ensemble type sound, such as Strings or Brass or a combo of both.

Also, these OTS sounds will be ones not in my Registration bank of 8 sounds, the first four of which are in a similar pattern to the above.

Some special styles, mainly FreePlay styles, and, especially Synthesizer related freeplay styles, will usually vary from the above norm, but still loosely adhere to the same idea with OTS1/2 being percussive (piano-like) or plucked sounds, and OTS3/4 being of the sustaining kind.

For me, it's always been about setting things up in related (and familiar) patterns, even as I traded up from instrument to instrument, no matter what the brand, as it prevents unwarranted surprises when performing.

Ian

When I want to use special sounds, I have a user sound area where I can instantly access them. These are sounds that I fine tuned to suit my taste in those particular instruments. Most of the time, though, it seems that Yamaha has done a great job of selecting the appropriate OTS voices for me.

Cheers,

Gary cool

Thanks for all the great responses...
I am currently setting up 10 RH and 10 LH Sound bars (Like registrations) on vA2 and I was curious to everyone's feelings on the OTTB STS/OTS.

When I had the T2 and the PA2XPRO I like some of the STS/OTS, but I admit I did like you Ian...used a lot of the same sounds in set places so I always knew what I had.

I do more orchestral stuff and standards, musical theatre etc...so I will carefully setup the sounds to support that.

Thanks,
Lee

While I love my Pa900, some of the STS settings for certain styles make me wonder what the designers were thinking ...
I have revised a good number of STS to my liking, but 99% of the time there is a piano voice - Grand/Electric/Rock/whatever - as the first RH voice ... I have set many of the 'Jazz' styles and 'standard' ballad styles with Piano, Vibes, Jazz Guitar, Organ as the lead voice for STS 1 through STS 4 respectively ... STS 1 is quite often set with the Piano/Vibes/Jazz Guitar as the 3 voices in STS 1 and I will use all three to get that 'Shearing' sound ...
