the SD7 doesnt support FM synthesis, does it? so those great sounds of the SD7 are sample based?

I have no idea about FM synthesis you can probably ask AJ maybe he knows?.....all I do know is when I close my eyes it sounds great!
I think many people are all hung up on the New when the OlD can still do just as good.. headphone

This is a sample based sound on SD7... Its not from FM Synthesis (with Operators like FM), because the SD7 is a typical Rom Player instrument.
However its very good sound, from a very good sampling of Ketron..
Bravo Ketron!!

John as you well know there are good and bad demos all over the web recorded in so many ways good & bad etc,..... but the Yamaha DX7 after 32+ years is and will remain one of the Classic KB's of all time & Arguably the mother of all digital synthesizers! ..

I guess thats why they bring back FM synthesis on the Montage... However, that is a quite advanced version of the orriginal DX version..

In my Kronos there is a MOD7 engine, which can also use the orriginal DX7 patches...tough it can also do a lot more..

Montage fm is indeed updated although FM hasn't fundamentally changed, it will still be best at percussive stuff like ep's and not so good at strings.

The dx7 was groundbreaking because it was a new synthesis system, really good value, and sounded pretty good on the things it was good at! Also it pushed the other manufacturers to raise their game.

Yamaha funded research into development of a synthesis technique that could be implemented totally digitally because then they could mass produce the stuff cheap. What the got was fm. The first mass exposure to FM sound was ELP Fanfare for the common man, although that monster played by Keith Emerson was built and sold by the Yamaha ordan division and is built mostly using discrete chips rather than the LSI chips used in the dx range.
