Just curious.

Anybody own and use(on a regular basis)both the Korg PA4X AND a Tyros or the S970?

I'm just wondering what your experience is?

Well you already know my experience and decision. First, it's not fair to compare S970 to top of the line Korg, except to say they are the same size and nearly same weight! You can use the same bag to carry them in.
As far as Tyros: too bulky, no touch screen, mediocre drums (except audio), too expensive, no multi-switch foot controller except the too-big, too-expensive MFC10.
I also much prefer the joystick to wheels, but that's personal. So many more real-time operating controls, including multiple programmable sliders and buttons. Excellent vocal processor and harmonizer. Universal power supply, dual midi/MP3/CDG players. Korg finally has guitar sounds as good as Yamaha (about time). There is also a fantastic new piano in it. I much prefer Songbook to Musicfinder.
Yamaha still gets points for easy access to external styles, availability of 14 million styles, although 13.9 million of them are duplicates or edits. smile
Yamaha has the PSR Tutorial forum going for it, although Yamaha has nothing to do with it. Thanks Joe!
Yamaha has polished, CD-like sound. Korg has more live, exciting sound. Yes, both can be edited, but not totally. As far as editing, Korg lets you do things on the fly easier. For example you can change and save most things while the style is running.
Korg periodically issues updates that include new styles, free of charge!
I could go on. The good news is that there is not a bad choice. Play whatever you like best and that you feel suits your needs and taste. They are both wonderful!

I just sold a Tyros 5-76 and purchased a Pa4x-76. Although I didn't own both the Pa4x at the same time I used a Pa3x-61 and the Tyros 5 at the same time. The Korg became my
gigging board of choice. Why? It's great for live play I like where all the controls are within easier reach than the T5 was, plus the Tyros 5 was a little bulkier than I wanted to haul around, but that wasn't the only reason. I liked the sound of the styles on the Pa3x better just personal taste. Audience wise whether I used the T5 or the Pa3x I received a positive reaction. IMO the T5 has some better saxes and trumpets, but I prefer the pianos and organs on the Korg, I used the ensemble feature very little so real loss for me there. I'm still a fan of Yamaha arrangers, got a CVP 307 sitting in the living room..................in a few weeks I'll probably put the Pa3x up for sale................. if I get my asking price at that point I just may consider an s970 or possibly a used s950.

P.S. DonM brings up some very good points, that I just didn't take the time to write in my answer. He's right on the money.

Hi Rog,

I went from the S910 to S970. I also bought a pa4x a couple of weeks ago.
The Yamaha's are very good with the S970 coming with great improvements over the S910. I use the S970 for smaller venues and find it very reliable, easy to play, and great styles and voices. I thought about the Tyros5 when looking for TOTL keyboard. Even though the Tyros has Organ World and Ensemble, it is to bulky and unwieldy to easily use for gigs Also, the drums are too enemic sounding, and many of the styles are too busy with unrealistic parts.

I decided to buy the Korg pa4x 76 instead. I am very happy I made that decision. The keybed feel is almost like my old G70, very much better that my S970. There are so many plusses like Songbook, TC Helicon VH, superior drums and tight bass with styles that suit me better, narrower and easy to carry, easy controls for fast selection,
chord sequencer, and on and on.

The last but not least is the deal from Frank compared to a Tyros 5. We are talking serious money.

Personally i dont see the need for more then a single arranger in your setup...

Adding a synth workstation or stage piano to your arranger adds much much more then a 2nd high end arranger... My Kronos 88 Adds a lot to my Tyros5 ... ( stagepiano, synths, karma, high end drums, near limitless expandabillity)

Also think that yamaha montage8 combined with the pa4x also makes a comparable combination..... Or pa4x plus Jupiter80 or RD800 if you dont like the typicall yamaha sound.

But having 2 arrangers in a single setup, what would that bring you?
