I had 6 uncles that served during WWII and 1 during the Korean War. All but one came home, one died in Korea after two months in combat. Of all those that came home, all but one were in the US Marines and served in the pacific. Three were wounded, and one, who was Iwo Jima was wounded four times and sent back to the line after recovering a few weeks in a field hospital. He was finally discharged when he contracted a severe case of malaria that nearly took his life. He said there were no million dollar wounds for the marines serving in the Pacific. The youngest and last surviving uncle, passed away a few years ago.

I served in the US Navy, spent just under 4 years aboard the USS Newport News (CA-148), a heavy cruiser. I only got shot at once, and believe me, at 18 years of age, you are scared to death when that happens. My younger brother served in the Navy as well, and was sent to Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis as one of the blockading ships. He served aboard a tiny, destroyer escort ship as a gunner's mate.

What is truly amazing about the men and women that served in our armed forces back then is that just 12-percent of the US population served and fought for our nation's freedom, and the freedom of so many other nations. Today, that figure is far less, averaging about .5-percent.

Happy Memorial Day everyone,

Gary cool

How about changing our stupid policies on how we are better then them and they say they are better than us.
How about stop creating all these senceless wars so rich can get richer and poor can get poorer meanwhile creating havock in other countries, well just because we can. How about stop sending our young boys and girls to these wars that we created. How about stop watching stupid news channels where all they do is selling propaganda and creating more hate between people. How about start thinking for ourselves and stop just doing what we were programmed to do. How about we start electing leaders who don't want wars. Scratching our balls and saying how we support our troops is as idiotic as it can get. And you have no idea what war really is and what it does to people.

I could go on forever on this topic. If you have no idea what I am saying here you are probably part of the this problem too.

And, you have spent how much time in countries other than Canada and USA, and how much time in service of your country in any capacity whatsoever, and exactly how much time have you spent fighting for someone's freedom from tyranny?

good points, mirza ... however, until the ENTIRE population of the ENTIRE world starts thinking this way, unfortunately wars are inevitable ...

I salute all those - including myself - who have served this country ...

Gary I spent 3 years in country where there was a war. And I don't wish something like that to anyone. I didn't invade other countries and I never will . And going to to the other countries to get rid of their tyrants just to install our own tyrants and to take oil and the other goods while bringing multiple countries to a total end is hardly something to be proud of with someone with any decency or any humanity in them. This only shows we are not any better than those loonies over there . And I guess that is ok too. Lets just not pretend that we are the good guys.

But as long as we can play our arrangers here it's all good. Maybe that is why we send our young boys and girls there to die. All is good.

Tony I totally agree with you. There is a saying" For any man with even a little bit of a brain , a war is already a lost cause."

Mirza, in the four years I was in the Navy, I went to more countries than most people on the planet know even exists. I've seen the horrors of war, and I don't wish it on anyone. Wars really don't accomplish much, and for the most part, never will. However, when you have the opportunity to visit places such as Buchenwald, which I saw first hand, and the atrocities there, you begin to understand why some wars are fought.

In my lifetime, I have been to more than 100 countries throughout the world, and though some cultures were very interesting, the only place for me is the USA. I was among those 1,700 sailors that dug bodies out of the rubble at Agadir Morocco in 1960 when the earthquake there killed 10,000 people, a time when the French pretty much owned the place and would not go in and provide assistance. I was in Cyprus during the Cypriot revolt, where 30 sailors from our ship were killed during a police action to quell rioting on the streets. I was in Beirut when things were going crazy there in 1959, patrolling the streets with nothing more than a night stick and hoping I would survive the night without being killed by some crazy that hated all Americans.

I'm not sure which country you are talking about, but like any veteran I deplore war and those that wage it. And, that's why I'm proud to have served this nation in the capacity I did for those years.

For the past 20 years, I have performed for Memorial Day and Veterans Day at no cost to the facilities where I performed. I did it for those brave individuals that gallantly served to preserve this nation and all it stands for.

Gary

Morocco gained independence in 1956 so the French did NOT practically own the place.

You don't need to visit Buchenwald. Just visit any Native American reservation (Pine Ridge, Navaho Indian Reservation, etc.).

Ports of Call visits aren't the same as living and experiencing a foreign culture firsthand.

The US only wages war out of self-interest. Do you want me to believe that you actually like Afghans, Iranians, Iraqis?

Go out and take care of your homeless veterans.

Every nation has those that gallantly serve to preserve their nation and what it stands for.

For the record, I did service in TWO countries.

Actually, I have visited several nattive American reservations, the Calispel, which immediately comes to mind, when I lived in Spokane, Washington. Ignus Nick, who was the police chief of the reservation, was a very good friend of mine and we fished and hunted together near Usk, WA. How many of these reservations have you visited?

Have you ever been to Germany, Japan, France, the middle east, western Europe? Yeah, I thought so. Amazing! Yet, you and Mirza want to knock our vets and our nation.

Been to Germany and speak the language. Been to Japan and can make myself understood when speaking Japanese. Been to France and speak the language. Been to the Middle East and encountered nothing but hospitality. Western Europe? Germany and France are in West Europe. You may be surprised by how many countries I've visited. You know, actually living with the locals, savoring their cuisine, trying to converse in their language. And you know what? Every country I've been to never made me think that my country of birth was any better. There are many cultures and no culture is superior to the others. No man is superior. No nation is superior.

Well, I've have never visited reservations but I do have several very close friends that are Native American: one is a Flathead married to a Crow and lives on the Crow Indian Reservation near Billings, Montana. Another lives on the Nez Perce Reservation in N. Idaho. There are a couple more. They'd all see you rather go and have their country back.

Knocking your vets? I know what you're getting at. It's the same old delusional story that if it wasn't for you guys (the US) we'd all be speaking German, right? As far as I know, it was the Allied Forces and mostly Russia that beat the Axis. Who's knocking vets trying to take all credit for itself?

For a nation that wages war non-stop -and you being such an adamant supporter- you sure have thin skin. It's always best to look in your own backyard first.

There's a world out there, not just the US. Your traveling days haven't taught you much. My travels have taught me that there isn't such a thing as "the greatest" nation.

Mirza went through more than you could ever imagine. He has all my respect for he's a man with integrity.

Taike thank you.

Gary I am not knocking the troops or you great nation.
All I an saying is , let's stop supporting imperialism. Let's stop our governments from creating more wars, more enemies, more poverty in this world by installing our puppets in their governments. Look what happened to Iraq,Syria, Afghanistan. We are not liberating them and installing democracy. It's pure imperialism. And than we are appalled and surprised when they send their lunatics with home made bombs. Unfortunately inocent people die usually on both sides.
Let's bring the troops back and stop them from senseless dying so the rich can get more richer and poor will be more poorer. Let's take care of homeless vets. America is full of them.
