I had 6 uncles that served during WWII and 1 during the Korean War. All but one came home, one died in Korea after two months in combat. Of all those that came home, all but one were in the US Marines and served in the pacific. Three were wounded, and one, who was Iwo Jima was wounded four times and sent back to the line after recovering a few weeks in a field hospital. He was finally discharged when he contracted a severe case of malaria that nearly took his life. He said there were no million dollar wounds for the marines serving in the Pacific. The youngest and last surviving uncle, passed away a few years ago. I served in the US Navy, spent just under 4 years aboard the USS Newport News (CA-148), a heavy cruiser. I only got shot at once, and believe me, at 18 years of age, you are scared to death when that happens. My younger brother served in the Navy as well, and was sent to Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis as one of the blockading ships. He served aboard a tiny, destroyer escort ship as a gunner's mate. What is truly amazing about the men and women that served in our armed forces back then is that just 12-percent of the US population served and fought for our nation's freedom, and the freedom of so many other nations. Today, that figure is far less, averaging about .5-percent. Happy Memorial Day everyone, Gary

I could go on forever on this topic. And, you have spent how much time in countries other than Canada and USA, and how much time in service of your country in any capacity whatsoever, and exactly how much time have you spent fighting for someone's freedom from tyranny?

Mirza, in the four years I was in the Navy, I went to more countries than most people on the planet know even exists. I've seen the horrors of war, and I don't wish it on anyone. Wars really don't accomplish much, and for the most part, never will. However, when you have the opportunity to visit places such as Buchenwald, which I saw first hand, and the atrocities there, you begin to understand why some wars are fought.
In my lifetime, I have been to more than 100 countries throughout the world, and though some cultures were very interesting, the only place for me is the USA. I was among those 1,700 sailors that dug bodies out of the rubble at Agadir Morocco in 1960 when the earthquake there killed 10,000 people, a time when the French pretty much owned the place and would not go in and provide assistance. I was in Cyprus during the Cypriot revolt, where 30 sailors from our ship were killed during a police action to quell rioting on the streets. I was in Beirut when things were going crazy there in 1959, patrolling the streets with nothing more than a night stick and hoping I would survive the night without being killed by some crazy that hated all Americans.
I'm not sure which country you are talking about, but like any veteran I deplore war and those that wage it. And, that's why I'm proud to have served this nation in the capacity I did for those years.
For the past 20 years, I have performed for Memorial Day and Veterans Day at no cost to the facilities where I performed. I did it for those brave individuals that gallantly served to preserve this nation and all it stands for.
Gary

Actually, I have visited several nattive American reservations, the Calispel, which immediately comes to mind, when I lived in Spokane, Washington. Ignus Nick, who was the police chief of the reservation, was a very good friend of mine and we fished and hunted together near Usk, WA. How many of these reservations have you visited? Have you ever been to Germany, Japan, France, the middle east, western Europe? Yeah, I thought so. Amazing! Yet, you and Mirza want to knock our vets and our nation. Gary

Taike thank you.
Gary I am not knocking the troops or you great nation. All I an saying is , let's stop supporting imperialism. Let's stop our governments from creating more wars, more enemies, more poverty in this world by installing our puppets in their governments. Look what happened to Iraq,Syria, Afghanistan. We are not liberating them and installing democracy. It's pure imperialism. And than we are appalled and surprised when they send their lunatics with home made bombs. Unfortunately inocent people die usually on both sides. Let's bring the troops back and stop them from senseless dying so the rich can get more richer and poor will be more poorer. Let's take care of homeless vets. America is full of them.
