It just got here Friday. Used it this week-end and all week.

It's a Hammond SK1-73. Can't wait to get to work tonight.


I've decided to convert three nights a week to a duo from a single. I'll use my favorite drummer and that great Rhodes (the Doors) style left hand bass.


I went from $250 to $295.00. I'll give the drummer $100.00 and take $195.00. I'm doing the first hour solo, with a nylon string guitar.

It feels so loose and free of limits on drum breaks, tempo changes, etc. I'm using it with a Motion Sound top box (rotors). I like a lot about this unit. The extra 12 notes make piano sounds easier (Rhodes and Wurlitzer are my favorites, followed by Clavinova). And the Hammond sounds are the best. That's coming from a long-time B-3 dude.

Best money I've spent in a LONG TIME!

I'll still use my arranger, but only when absolutely necessary.
Anyone interested in a "cherry" XB-2? Not a mark on it. Less than 10 hours playing time. Played out 4 times. I used an SK1 instead, under the arranger. Might need a battery. $500.00 plus shipping.

Hammond makes great keyboards for the keyboard purists... underestimated brand, and much cheeper then Nord, there is a lot of controll

You really are a "lucky duck" Russ. When you get tired of it, just send it over, (post -paid) of course. I need a quality organ in my house.

I have the Sk1-73 and SK1-88. Gig using both love them!!

Nigel, I've played 7 gigs with it already and feel right at home. My duo costs me about $55.00 a night at a restaurant gig, but I make $150-300.00 more with the group based on the organ out at events.

Love this method of playing. Of course, my son (my bass player) does not like the use of left-handed bass.

I still use him on primarily piano gigs, or for trio with guitar.

I wish I had an excuse to get an SK2. Did you consider using bass pedals with it ? Thats what I do with my BK9. Bass Pedals, LH comp with piano or EP and RH organ.
Of course I do this just for myself, can't get any gigs like that.
I'm jealous, you get to play real music on a real keyboard with a real drummer. Its how I used to gig years ago and I miss it.

Bill, no attempt to use/add pedals yet. The two jobs I use this set-up on are light jazz, where you use left-handed bass exclusively. That's why, with this set-up, the next step would be to either add a bass or a guitar to fill out the chords.

I'm the first to admit that this format is a hard sell. Luckily, I'm part of the old establishment and I can pretty much call the shots....at least at society kind of jobs. I can sell the "coolness" of walking left hand and that sparse style at civic events. It wouldn't work at dances, etc. Then, I add both a bass and guitar or, more often, switch off on guitar and piano.

I'm lucky to have survived as long as I have, and to have access to the kinds of jobs that give me the freedom to do what I like.

Another source of enjoyable jobs is on classical guitar...no other instruments...no vocals, just jazz standards played by working up arrangements that contain bass lines, chords and melodies.

Now, that, I really like.
