Darn, got to the gig and discovered I forgot my Ipad pro which I use to display all
my leadsheets. So, I broke out my Iphone and got on the internet and went to my cloud storage where I keep all my leadsheets. The picture shows what it looked like. It worked really well but it sure was hard to read.

Deane,

It's how one of the Apollo missions were able to return to earth using good old compasses, their 'thumbs' to estimate distances and old school logic and common sense.. etc when all the computers on board failed!

However ....

Transfer all your music (in PDF format) into your SD7, and store together with your registrations. Each time you recall a registration, the lyrics will be displayed automatically .... besides - the SD7 screen is a 'little' bigger than that of your iphone :-)

Happy weekend!

Thank you Bruno.
Donny, entire career of 60 years I have never been able to memorize songs. I can site read just about everything first time through but now memorize songs.

AJ, exactly where on the SD7 would I store my PDF lead sheets?

Hi Deane
Maybe a paper copy just tucked away and kept in the trunk of the car , wouldn't go astray?

Can't imagine how you managed to read that tiny little screen . Wow.
Good thinking ,though.

Riki,
I have over 4000 of these lead sheets. Paper copies are out of the question. I take requests and I never know what folks will ask for.

Deane

How do you choose the styles in real time, with that number of songs. Have you made up registrations, or do you have generic categories?

Hi Bernie,
It is not a real issue. I use unreal book and the quick search feature requires only a few letters be typed and is super fast. I guess after years of using this system it just falls into place. Often I can find what I need before the song I'm playing is over.

That is fine for bringing up the lead sheet, but I was wondering about the styles you choose for 4000 songs off the cuff.

Bernie,
I try hard to tweak or select styles that fit well with any song. But many styles can be used with many different styles. I usually just select a fitting style from the list I am using for the gig. It works really well for requests. There really is no real trick or "system" to my method.

Thanks Deane

I was curious because I have registrations for all of my songs, but I think I need generic styles to handle ones I know but have not made up. Whereas they may not be spot on, they will be close enough.

When I get a new keyboard or a new group of styles I play each style and see what song comes to mind. Then I wrote them to the SongBook. If one style fits more than one song, I try to make the pads and STS a bit different.

I do the above quickly. Mine is a game of constant editing. Each time a play a song I add to it if the feeling comes. I truly enjoy organizing my keyboard; especially if it is a new one.

Deane, when I first started using a laptop my set of books (hard copy) was in the trunk of my car. Now the laptop is in the my car and the IPad s my music stand. I’ve heard of people who carry an extra keyboard – and some an extra amp.

Keep going Deane, John C.

Wow Deane,
that must have taken a long time to put together.
I can see why you wouldn't want them in paper form.

Like most arranger owners I became anal about collecting styles and also PDF form of lead sheets. I use several different keyboard setups for gigs - Dans vArranger, a Korg PA4X, a Ketron SD7, and my Tyros 4. With each setup I use a different way of using and finding my song setups. on the Korg I use the songbook, on the SD7 I use registrations, on the T4 I use only songstyles grouped by various gig requirements and also in Alpha order. Dans vArranger allows me to associate the correct lead sheet with the style and displays it on the laptop screen when the songstyle is selected. I don't really have a favorite method - they all work great with each keyboard.

You can also do this on the Korg and Yamaha. The Korg and maybe the Yamaha also allows you to pick a pdf and it will set up the keyboard. Both will allow you to pick a style and it will bring up the pdf.

I use Michael Bedesem's Open Text - a free program to display my sheets on a 20" Dell Inspiron screen.($380) PDF's are called up from my Yamaha registration.

A simple and inexpensive option.

Here is an example.

Deane,

TO ASSOCIATE PDF, TXT, WAV. JPG, MIDI or anyfile with a REGISTRATION on the SD7/MIDJAY PRO/SD40/SD9

• Create a folder PDF – and copy all your PDF files there (this also applies to any files … pictures (JPEG), videos … etc. Of course you would create different folders (e.g. VIDEO, PICTURES… etc) as the case might be.
• With all your files in the SD7, go and load the registration you want to link to any of the above files (as you normally do now by pressing REGISTR…. Selecting and loading your registration).
• With the registration loaded, press the PLAYER 1 button to display the contents of the SD7’s Drive.
• Go to the folder (e.g. PDF) where the files you want to link to the current REGISTRATION reside.
• Touch the PDF file you want to link to the Registration (make sure you only touch it once … if you touch twice, it will open the file!)
• Press the SAVE button. You will now have 3 options – REGISTRATION, CUSTOM START UP and FACTORY START UP.
• Touch REGISTRATION (if it is not already yellow).
• Touch SAVE if you want re-save your registration with the same name as before (and ok the over-write message on the next screen)…. OR …. Touch SAVE AS to give it a new name in the next screen.
• The next time you load this REGISTRATION, the corresponding file (in this case PDF) will automatically be displayed.
• If you want to manually turn on/off the lyrics/PDF/Picture, simply press the LYRICS button on the panel. This way, you will be returned to the operating screen of the SD7 during live use!

• You can also set up the REGISTRATION menu such that if the file linked is a song file (wave, midi, mp3), as soon as the REGISTRATION is loaded, the instrument can...
* Either - wait for you to touch the file name on the screen or press the START/STOP button before the associated file starts playing .... or ....
* Start playing the associated file as soon as the Registration is loaded (thus you won't have to press another button).
* You can also connect these units to an external monitor via the internal monitor jack located at the back and place that on your music rest for use if larger font sizes are needed.

Enjoy … your SD7 … and since you won’t have any more use for your ipad, please send it over :-)

Nice way to save the day, Deane. I don't know if I could see my iPhone screen, lol. Actually, I have thought of using an iPhone as the primary screen, but having it closer to my eyes, like off a mic stand.

Reading these posts and I hope manufacturers are also looking at this now realize how important it is to have a
LARGE TILTED DISPLAY SCREEN ON THESE KEYBOARDS.......for playing, reading, editing, the bigger the better
at least 12" INCHES should be the new NORM in today's world!.
