Just curious. Since most Arranger players seem to have a touch of 'geek' in them, I was wondering how many of you have/use so-called SmartWatches; and if so, HOW you use them. For instance;
1. Do you use it as your 'everyday' watch?
2. How many of the 'smart' functions do you use (ie. notifications,text msgs,email,scheduling,pedometer,calls,etc.?
3. Do you have more than one?
4. Did you go for a 'cheapie' ($10-50.00), mid-line (($50-150.00) or TOTL ($150-500.00)?
4. Did you go back to a 'regular' watch?
5. If 'SIM-based', do you sometimes leave your regular phone at home (such as on a run)?
6. Does your's have a camera/vid recorder; if so, have you ever used it?

As a gadget freak, geek, and compulsive spender, my own collection has grown to six, ranging in price from low to high. I wear the same $15 one every day (the first one I bought)....can't really explain why although it has all the standard, basic functions. The biggest PIA is keeping them all charged. On those rare occasions when I dress up in suit and tie, I always wear my 'dumb' Citizen eco-drive (haven't wound or charged or changed batteries, or anything else that keeps it running, in five years and it's been dead accurate all that time).
Your thoughts on whether you think this is a passing fad/trend or will ever increasing functionality and decreasing prices make them as indispensable as our current day smartphones. Curious minds want to know.

I'll get one of those watches when it comes with on-board speakers and a 15" screen I can read in the sun, ...

Ha! Most of you guys are too weak or too lazy to haul a G70 around (for money) so I can't see you lugging around a 15" watch . (well maybe Fran would ).

My watch cost me $8 at Wally World, it's water resistant, has a sweep second hand, and tells me what time it is - which is why a bought a watch to begin with. My watch is just as dumb as I am!

I saved a bundle. I just duct tape my cell phone to my wrist.

I was told that if you add another learning curve at my age it will shorten my life. (smile) I added the amount of time I have to use to keep all the technology I use going from keyboard, Computer, IPad and the stuff in my new car – It scared me.

I think this is the worst money spend in the last 3 years... to expensive limited funtionallity.... i think a cheeper sports armband would have done the job just fine...

Bachus, first of all, thank you for responding. My experience pretty much mirrors yours. One thing I do find interesting though, is that most people that use them can't seem to go back to a conventional watch. Psychologically, it just feels like you're going from a computer (word processor) back to a typewriter. I was hoping for more responses but I guess in this age group, 'early adopter' may not apply (except for arranger keyboards ).

I've tried 'em, but I'm sort of afraid to wear an expensive one because if I'm not working, I'll most likely be playing golf or fishing and don't want to lose or break it. I prefer just to keep the "phone" handy.
I'm on line with the tablet/p.c. at work, so I don't have much of a need for another device.
Besides that my fingers are big.

I have some deep cuts in the glass of my apple watch.. Worst thing, it happened in the classroom while teaching and i dont know how...

I dont think i will go back either... as i said, there is some functionallity available, with heart rate and so...

I just think i much cheaper watch would have done the same... there is a fitbit at 1/3th the price of my applewatch that has all the functionallity i am using, and a build in GPS on top of that


This is probably the first apple product not worth its investment to me..

I just read this post. I thought long and hard about an Apple Smart Watch. I did buy one it wasn't TOTL, but was a pretty decent watch. I must have watched 10 different You Tube videos before I decided on buying one, actually I didn't buy it, it was a gift for my birthday. Yup I'm a bit geeky otherwise I would have passed on purchasing one.

To answer your questions.

1. Yes I use it as an everyday watch, unless I'm doing some work around the home then I usually put on my Timex Ironman Triathlon watch.

2. I use many of the functions. I ride a bicycle and/or walk ( can't run anymore knees won't allow it) at least 5 days per week. I'm able to track distance, speed and heart rate. When I'm riding I want to keep my heart rate in an aerobic zone. Old habits die hard, this goes back to the days when I competed in road races, short distance triathlons. At one time I used a separate heart rate monitor and a Garmin GPS watch to keep track of activity. Those 2 devices back in the 90s cost more than the Apple Watch with just one sole function each. Now it's done with one watch. I do monitor texts and phone calls via the watch, if it's an 800 number or a number I don't recognize I can decline the call looking at the watch on my wrist and not have to dig the phone out of my pocket. This comes in handy at meetings.

3. I only have one smart watch and that's plenty.

5. I take the phone with me when on a bike or walk.
6. Mine does not have a camera, but I can use it as a remote to control the camera in my iPhone. That feature has limited use in my opinion but could come in handy for street photography.

I have a fitbit that I wore every day for a few months. I was wondering how I was getting 1000 steps playing golf, when I was riding in a cart. Then I realize that when you swing your wrist it registers as steps. I quit using it since it was really telling me how many steps. It did heart rate but I don't really need that and seldom looked at it. It was even registering steps when I was fishing, sitting in a boat seat!

Fitbit seems to be more of an activity tracker although it has some 'smartwatch' functions. At my age, the only thing I care about with my heart is that it's still beating . As for the pedometer, it's only going to show me how many times I went from my lounge chair to the kithen to the bathroom and back. I don't really want to know that .

I haven't worn a watch since I got an iPhone. I'm not a jewelry guy, or very fashion conscious, so since I already have the functionality of a timepiece in my pocket, that's all I expect I'll use in the future. I'm not certain, but don't the smart watches have to be in very close proximity to your phone to work, anyway? (Maybe that's just Apple)

True ... but arranger keyboards very often help to add to our income - a 'smart watch? - not so much ...

But, for those of you who can afford to purchase these items, keep at it ... it keeps the economy going ...

PS ... for several years I had admired a 'classic' style Movado watch ... about 6 years ago my wife surprised me with it for a Christmas gift ... it's the only watch I wear ...

Ironically, I never wore a watch when I lived about the boat in the Florida Keys. I got out of bed when I felt like it, ate when I got hungry, went to bed when I felt tired, and pretty much pissed my time and money away. I kinda lived my life like a Jimmy Buffett song.
