When will this nonsense stop? Do people really believe that? Even the first series didn't have 1000w.

They are misleading numbers...and they don't mean a thing..

Do live comparisons and you will find the older gear with more realistic numbers out perform the big numbers..

Over the years I have done this many times..

I have Roland Cube 100's for more than 30 years.. and swear by them.

Some comparisons:

With my shore band, we played some big outdoor venues as well as convention halls..

I recall a boardwalk performance that we needed to cover a wide selection of boardwalk and surrounding area.

The promoter had a Mackie set up Mackie 300 speakers and Mackie power amp..

We set up Yorkville NX520p 550 watts x2 ., also a Yorkville sub..

I set up a pair of Roland Cube 100's ..

I controlled our set up with a Mackie CFX12 mixer, and controlled the feed to the Promoter's system..

At a point where the level was kicking in limiters to the Yorkville system and the Mackie system...the low rated (100 watt each)Roland's kept the show moving..

Even when all systems were working, I had headroom on the Roland system, and the Roland's could be heard above peaked Yorkville and Mackie systems..

Even bass carried better with Roland..

Now tell me how can this be?

Roland did not over rate their stuff back then..as many other companies..
Today they think nothing of stating big numbers that don't show true in the field..

Another time we played a large high ceiling (50 feet plus) convention center.. our stage level was 25 feet above the main floor, and across the way 100 feet, balconies at our level..

I used a pair of Roland Cube 100's... easily covered the venue..
The promoter remarked how excellent the sound coverage was..

Now tell me.. how can this be..

All these examples the units were on poles...

Roland amps are never on poles, I keep them on the floor always..

I know there is an opinion the 100 watts is a bench mark, and doubling the wattage only reflects in 10 percent volume increase..

But my experience the 100 watts out performs the 500 watt rated amps..

Most of the over rated units are bi amped two way systems..

Roland is a three way system.. single amp..

BTW: I still haven't used the 2 new /old stock Cubes I purchased nearly 15 years ago..

Yes, it is a numbers game. My RCF ART 312a is rated at 350w and it holds it own against my 1100w Yamaha DXR10.

Mine is bigger the yours doesn't mean better. The marketing for the powered speakers is all about getting the biggest number to show that there is a lot of headroom in the numbers.

100w used to sound like a lot!! Then 1000w turned into 1300w... then 1500w. I can't wait until the 3000w small powered speaker comes out in 2020!!

I am looking for a subwoofer to replace my 760w 15" EV. The new cardioid sub from QSC... KS212C is rated at 3600w... FOR A DUAL 12" single subwoofer!!!! Numbers game to create more numbers on their bottom line!!

The only numbers I would look at are SPL and degree coverage. There, you at least have a common starting point. It's also obvious that the new Class D digital amps are not as 'warm/clean' sounding as the class H or A/B analog amps used in the previous power speakers.

One thing is clear ... the newer stuff is generally way lighter than the old stuff ... but then again, you cannot really defy physics ... you've got to move sound to hear it ...until our hearing mechanisms are 'upgraded' too!

Degree of coverage is a big deal. However it's apparently not reported the same from one system to another.

For instance, I owned Bose Compacts...reported coverage 180 degrees. Yet, I find that my JBL Eon One, reported at 100 degrees or so seems to have the same width coverage as(my now sold) Compacts....at least when I moved about the room to listen to both.

2000 watts in the 8" model. That speaker must be made of some secret materials to not blow apart or melt.
As,for DB's their new line only 1 higher than the older models.
I think for bigger venues just adding more speakers would increase coverage and sound quality better,than maxing out one or two speakers. More speaker area,to move more air.
