Saw this over on Keyboard Corners but thought some over here might enjoy it. First, you don't have to LOOK like you've got soul to HAVE soul. This guy is like a Marco Parisi in the body of a typical Synthzoner smile. His solo starts at about 1:44. This is also why NOTHING in the keyboard world (except possibly piano) can match the screamin' Hammond organ. Thoughts not required smile.

The White man on the Hammond is a Black man in a White man's skin.

Now kidding aside, years ago my former teacher an Italian was playing music in a group of black musicians when a black guy walked up to the band leader and said, "I want to play with you guys." The band leader replied, "No, you can't." "Why not?" "Well, you are not black enough." "What? What about that white guy over there?" "You don't understand. Johnny is a black man in a white man's skin."

Yes, I agree. The culture is not really in the looks the hardware but rather inside the software.

"Thoughts Not Required"
...but I HAVE to comment. Outstanding of course, as is the sax solo, but I'm one of those who thinks having soul has nothing to do with the color of your skin.
I like to think there's a little soul in this old semi-Native American even.
When I was playing a B-3, in a former lifetime it seems, I was literally learning on stage and never approached any level of expertise. I wish I had one now though, just to play though, certainly not carry around!
I'll bet those keys don't hold up long under that amount of velocity though! I know Hammonds are rugged but that borders on organ-abuse! smile
Thanks Chas!

Why Chas, you're shorter, lighter, balder...a little heavier.

Seriously, folks, I'm not too bad on a B-3, but Chas is as good as I know, today. Just wish we could play together.

BTW, Chas, I'm supposed to be in Atlanta on Monday the 17th thru Thursday the 20th. After many last minute cancellations before, I am cautiously optimistic.

Love to visit with you and your sweet lady. I'll be in Louisville for a 24 hour session starting at 4:00 PM today, but back Friday. I'll let you know...

R.

Riding in the car the other day I was playing some jazz on my iPod ... A song came on featuring an organist ... my wife asked if it was Joey DeFrancesco ... I told her it was chas playing "More Today Than Yesterday" ...

Tony, I love your wife smile.

Hey Don, I never referenced the color of his skin, in fact, I referenced Marco Parisi (a great rock organist/keyboardist). BUT, you gotta' admit, the guy looks more like an accountant than a rock organist, which, btw, makes him that much more interesting. Two other things; did you notice the HUGE audience appreciation at the end? How often does the keyboard player (especially an organist) get any kind of acknowledgement in a big band setting? I say Hip hip hooray for a knowledgeable and hip audience and kudos to Maceo for making sure he got his just (well deserved) dues at the end. Glad you guys stuck with the original intent of the post (read the post TITLE again). Irrelevant Hijacks can be very annoying.

Russ, keep me informed. I'd love a visit. You can check out my 'mancave' (my wife gave me the entire basement). Here are some pics although still a work in progress (still haven't figured out where to set up my edrums smile )-

I've got a big storeroom and a little storeroom (with the unused exercise bike smile ) so I can continue to indulge my hobby of impulse buying smile. The little under-deck screen room is for cigar-smoking old pilots or weed-smoking musicians. My KeyB organ is in my football-watching/rehearsal room as it's too big for my modest 'studio'. Shower and Jacuzzi in basement bath has never been used as far as I know. Probably great for washing a dog if I had one. Anyhoo....I know you don't drink (nobody's perfect smile ) but hopefully you'll be up for a perfectly grilled filet mignon. Looking forward to your visit. I have some old (60's era) guitars and basses that I want you to check out (not to mention your Kymco 500 in the garage gathering dust smile ).

Russ, in case you missed it, that BOX link has three (3) pages of photos. When the first page ends, you have to go back and select page 2 (then 3). I don't know why Box can't fix that.

Fantastic Chas. I have just checked out the photos. You sure are living the life. And I really liked the pool table. Perfect. Jamming at your place must make for a great night.

On the first date with my wife of 37 years we played pool at a local pool room in Carlton Australia. And she beat me too. I had to fall in love with a woman who thought playing pool on the first date was good.

Great stuff Chas! I thought I was the only one that still had old Apex tube stands! You have a 3-tier one set up. I've never found anything else as versatile, light weight and strong.
