I just purchase the kn2600 because of the sounds,styles and pads
the white keys is now yellow and I would like to change them

Can't remember whether the KN2600 has a floppy disk slot but I rather think it doesn't. In which case you have got to download styles direct to the SD Card which is not a straightforward procedure.

Hello Howard,

the last update for the KN 2600 is 1.1 with 1.484 KB.
I am not sure but I believe that the update is made on the KN 2600 via the USB port. Take a look at the operating instructions page 188.
Maybe there is also a KN 2600 owner in the forum, who can provide information.

Hi Howard,

I would advise you not to install firmware on your KN2600. Usually the firmware updates don't add important features, most usually they correct spelling errors in various languages, stuff like that. It won't give you new styles or sounds.

Installing firmware can damage your keyboard if it goes wrong and there's nobody who can help you if that happens.

You say you have an SD card with KN7000 styles that works. This makes me think that perhaps you aren't transferring styles to your other SD cards correctly.

To transfer styles to a card you need KN-SDExplorer or other similar software. You can get the free demo here:

Instructions are also on the site, read the sections carefully.

You don't need to buy the full version of KN-SDExplorer, the free version will transfer 10 styles. Then you can re-start it to transfer another ten and so on. Or maybe you have it already. If you bought it in the past I can arrange for the license to be sent to you again. If so, send me the email address you used at the time AND your current email address via a private message and I'll organise for the license to be sent to you.

Remember that you must format the SD Card in your KN2600 and you must make a directory (using the keyboard) and save something onto the card also (using the keyboard), to prepare it correctly. You can save anything onto the card. After that, you use KN-SDExplorer to transfer styles onto the card.

This procedure is exactly the same for the KN7000. There is no difference in how the KN7000 and KN2600 work with SD Cards but you don't have the benefit of being able to transfer from floppy to SD using the KN2600 so you have to use KN-SDExplorer or similar software.

Also, if you have a KN7000.sdb backup on your computer, the KN-SDExplorer software will restore that backup to a blank card for you.

I am still working with the programmer to bring out a new version of KN-SDExplorer but it is very time-consuming and we've both been delayed due to work and illness. However, the current version works fine in all versions of Windows which is testament to the original programming. Just that we are (still) working on a simpler version, it is not forgotten.

Some 2Gb SD Cards may work but the officially supported maximum size is an SD-Secure Card of 1Gb. SDHC and other types of SD cards won't work at all.

Over the last couple of years I've had some problems with my sites but they now run on very fast servers and most of the problems are resolved. I'm constantly working to improve them when family time, work and health allow and I'm also very grateful to John (JD5live) and Roger (Rmepstead) and Dave Tutt for the help they give me and the members because I simply can't cope on my own.

John and I own most models of Technics keyboards between us and we have a KN2600 so I can assure you that the above information is correct and we'll try to help you out where we can when time allows but it does take a bit of learning on how to transfer styles, same as for all of the Technics models.

Thanks also to many of you who have written to check that all is ok, I do my best to answer everyone but things have been difficult, all is improving now.

Ok I understand. It seems you are doing everything correctly. I've put the instructions below, translated to English. However, I believe there is a step missing in the instructions.

Before you start, you must format the SD Card in your KN2600 ****AND**** you must SAVE something to the card. As you know, this creates the PRIVATE directory and other Technics files on the card. From what I understand, the keyboard won't recognise a formatted card with only the "KN24PRG.DAT". It also needs the normal Technics file structure to be present.

Another way is to put the "KN24PRG.DAT" on one of your existing cards which already has Technics files on it, so the structure is already there.

Hi Howard,

None of those. It should be in the top level.

You also have to take it out of the zip too. Double-click on the zip to open it and then drag the "KN24PRG.DAT" into the top level of the SD Card.

"Root" is the "page" that first open. If it's nothing to see on a USB stick or memorycard, no folders or anything, that's usually the root of the disk.
If the file you are going to use have to be in the root, just drag (or copy/paste) direct into the SDcard, not into any folder.

I've downloaded the update file from CA and added here as well if you want to try with a new zip just in case your file is damaged in any way.

According to the written "How to" document, the file you shall place in the root of the SD card is KN24PRG.DAT

But, I'm not quite sure if the file is correct for the KN2600. Then maybe it should be named KN26PRG.DAT and not KN24....
Maybe that's why you get the blue screen and no action, it's not the correct file, and KN2600 refuse to read it.
I've searched the web to see if I could find another downloadsource, but no luck so far.

Regarding the exe file, if I don't remeber it wrong, at Technics own supportpage we could download exe files to extract stright from PC to floppy disks before process the update.
(The exe file(s) you have are probably ment for KN2400? I downloaded the KN2400 file from CA, and that is 2 exefiles ment to extract to floppies.)

Wops, sorry if my bad english misleaded you to try change the name of the file, that's not a good idea at all.
What I mean to say is that this file can be a bad or wrong file, and the genuine file for the update may have another name that correspond to the keyboard it's made for.

Always be very careful when update firmware, because if anything goes wrong, the keyboard might stop work.

I'll keep my eyes open and look for any solution. But as we know there is hard to find any support and update for Technics nowadays.

The update is a zip-file, which you download to the hard disk of your PC - but do not unpack (unzip)! This file is self-extracting!

Insert an SD Card into the Card Writer of the PC and unpack it on the SD Card!

Now proceed as described by Gunnar Jonny.
Switch off KN 2600. Insert SD Card.
Hold keys 1-4 of the Panel Menory and switch on KN 2600.
You will be guided through the program on the display.

If the KN2600 do format the card properly, and if you can save and read any files at all using the keyboard, it should "see" the update file as well.
But, SD card size is pointed out in the procedure, so it may as well be a point to follow.

I do remember there was some dicussion about the the limit / max storage capasity of the SD cards usable at Technics.
As years goes by, there has been a huge step forward within digital storage as well as "bits and bytes". ( 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 bit and so on)

There is an answer for what was wrong during formatting the SD card back then.

Does the directory usually created when format SD card using KN2600 show up?
If not, the SD card may not be formatted correctly.
Also I notice the filename is written using big letters.
We never know, maybe rename the file like in in Alecs reply kn24prg.dat just to see if it makes any difference?

It looks like the filename itself is correct, and the file is most likely the file needed as long as it is not damaged or not copied properly.

.inf file are common in many cases, and probably created by the KN.

If you delete all files already into the SD cardwhen see at the PC, and do a totally new format using KN, what files do you see in the SD card afterwards?

Yes you can attach a photo to posts in this forum. When you post there is "File Manager" available that lets you browse to a picture on your computer and it will upload and be displayed in your post if you then click on "Add File".

Try a factory reset first. From the user manual:

While pressing the three lower left buttons in the RHYTHM GROUP section (JAZZ & SWING, BALLROOM & SHOW and LATIN & WORLD) at the same time, turn the POWER button on. (Note that, in this case, all programmable settings, functions and memories return to their factory preset status.)

Format the SD Card on the KN2600... but formatting is not enough. You have to also save something from the keyboard onto the SD card (save anything), so that it will contain the file structure.

KN24PRG.DAT - the size of this file on your PC after extracting it from the zip is 3.58mb.

Put KN24PRG.DAT on the SD card.

Your card should now contain these:

PRIVATE (a folder)
KN24PRG.DAT (the update file)

With the keyboard off, insert the SD Card.

Hold down the first four panel memory buttons and turn on the keyboard.

Looks like the updatefile is saved into the folder "Private" ?
It should be in root, outside the folder according to the "How to do" manual.
In that case you would see the file where you see the folders at left, at same level as the Private folder, beside it, but not in it.

I think if it was inside the PRIVATE folder we would see the TECHNICS folder on the right too. It seems to be in the correct place I think.

Is the name of the card "private" as well?

Name of card is underscores [on the top left _________(H:)] so it should be fine I think.

It's been some years since KN series was produced, and I wonder if i.e. use of Win 10 / 64bit would be a problem when copy to card?
I have experienced such problems using other equipment before, and solved it by use older PC / OS.

Yes it's because the PRIVATE folder is in the root and so is the KN24PRG.DAT.

You're right it is possible for the operating system to be a problem, I've had problems before too but not so much with file transfer, well I can't remember a file transfer issue. More likely when it is unzipping. If the format is done in the keyboard then the file system should be fine on the card.

The only way I can help further is to try it on the same model. We'll try that beginning of Feb and will try the file transfer with Windows 10, Windows 7 and XP. It will be interesting to find the correct procedure.

I had a similar problem on my KN7000. In the end I found that I had to press and hold the buttons very, very hard. Maybe I had some bad contact on one of the buttons. I also seem to remember that I used google translate from German to English then and there was some small thing I missed from the translation. AND I remember that one of my floppy disks had a problem and I had to re-write it on a new floppy disk. Because KN7000 does the upgrade from floppy.

Yes. DAT files can be audio files, so the file associates with your music programme but this one is not a DAT audio file, it is DAT for 'data' so no audio in it.

It's important that all 4 buttons are pressed, and keep pressed until KN is powered, then release.

I done the format from the keyboard ,I name the sdcard UPDATE
after when back to my PC ,unzip the update in the sdcard
After I open the sdcard from my PC and delete the pdf (INSTALL)
When back to the keyboard with cross fingers Press memory 1234
and power.
And voila the update was successfull = ver.1.1
