Had a request for an upcoming date where they like a little gospel in the mix.

What songs do you recommend as the better ones especially that everyone can relate to it including those that may not be familiar with the general public.

Here's some I thought of:

Whispering Hope
Amazing Grace
Peace In The Valley
Just A Closer Walk With Thee - Maybe with a New Orleans slant.
Amen

Here are some I took from the internet. Not sure if they all would really be classified as gospel.

One Day At A Time
He's Got The Whole Wide World In His Hands
Awesome God
You Are My Sunshine ??????? Really?
I Saw The Light
Down By The Riverside - ala Louie Armstrong
Joshua Fit The Battle
Swing Low Sweet Chariot
Somtimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child
Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen
Saint's Go Marching In
Rock Of Ages
Blowin In The Wind ?????
Kumbaya
Battle Hymn Of Republic
How Great Thou Art
In The Garden
Put Your Hand In The Hand

Any of the above you disagree with? Which ones would you recommend most whether on my list or from your experience?

Thanks

Scott

It looks like a great song list to me. I would maybe try as you said to give some not all but some of them a gospel dixieland feel and you should be all set.

Put Your Hand In the Hand medley with This Little Light Of Mine.
I often use it as a closer.

Great list. Add the Old Rugged Cross, definitely include In the Garden, Just a Closer Walk With Thee, How Great Thou Art. Most will also know and love Power in the Blood!

I've heard great versions of Go Tell it on the Mountains, with sax improvisations etc

Scott, if this is a senior event, I would keep the songs upbeat. No gloom and doom songs - they really don't need them. When you are close to being dead, you really need something upbeat that you can relate to. Will The Circle Be Unbroken has always been a big hit with the seniors.

Hi Scott:

That is a pretty good list for starters. Don't know how much time you have but a visit to Hobby Lobby will earn you the instant joy of hearing Gospel Songs played in such a variety of styles without the vocals... you will be blown away. Marketing 209! These folks are brilliant.

Then, there is option two: Visit any nearby church and see if you can borrow one of their hymnals.

Gary is always right! Best of luck with this gig. Would love a front row seat.

All the best, ----Dave Rice

I can’t think of any gospel tune that is gloomy. They are by nature uplifting, but I know what you mean by keeping the songs upbeat for a senior event. Foot-stomping, earth-shaking gospel songs seem to cheer them all including those who can’t relate to the lyrics.

When The Roll is Called Up Yonder - I found this wild funk style version of it. What a singer this young lady is.

Precious Lord Take my Hand – though it is not a fast tempo song, many seem to like it very much. In this video, they sing it in 4/4 instead of 3/4.

If you are going to watch a portion, start at 4:30. I love how the two singers interacted with each other. I also liked what the blind pianist was doing.
