Hi Donnie...Thanks for asking about the jams...These are Monthly one night music jams...One Jam is weekly 5 miles from my home which I partner with a close friend A Harmonica player and Vocalist. I Emcee the evening. The other Jams are within a 20 mile radius from where I live. Most are 6-9 PM with donated food and snacks...All with their personal touch. We average 10 Musicians up front running 4-5 vocal Mics. Lots of guitars Fiddle player, Piano, Base player and drummer...Also people come up from the audience to sing with the players. We use a signup tablet. Last Home jam we had 20 on the signup...70 people total...Good Time for sure....20 Years ago when I stepped away We averaged 200-300 People a night! Hope this gives you a clearer understanding....Thanks Harold

Harold, with the proper promotions, lots of legwork, you can make all this work, and possibly get back to the numbers of the old days.

Unfortunately, audience demographics change with time, something that I began noticing more than 50 years ago. For the most part, I was able to compensate when I was performing in the nite club/restaurant/bar circuit. I transitioned from a pawn shop acoustic guitar to a 6 string electric, and later to a 12-string Yamaha, which I loved the sound of. When arranger keyboards became available, I again transitioned, then expanded my audience base by adding more diversity to my repertoire, going from primarily country music to light rock, big band, swing, light jazz, show tunes, etc...

As my audiences grew, my old band mates, whom all stayed with country and bluegrass, began losing their audiences. They refused to change and within a few years, they were no longer playing.

The main reason I left the nite club/restaurant/bar circuit was for financial reasons - they were paying the same fees they paid 40 years ago. I then transitioned once again, but this time to the senior circuit. Great audiences, nearly every job was mid day or early evening, the pay was great, I was home every night for supper, and able to make enough money to put together a small, but adequate retirement account.

The only reason I retired was due to my failing health.

Good luck - I know you can do this!

And now you know why I am selling all my keyboards -- I am going to move next door to Harold.
Years back I went into a music store in a small down in Carolina. I wanted to see the guitar he had in the window. In the middle of he store there were six men with guitars sitiing in a circle. They owner said, "Do you play guitar?" I said yes. He kicked a char in my direction and said, "Sit down, we'll talk about the guitar later." I wanted to move there too.

Zuki, the shot has already been fired. I have 76 on the way. If I can't handle it I might be open to trade for a 61, but may take me a little while to know.
I talked to both John and Harold this week, and also DickieT has a "new" 61. I made a deal with Frank for the kb and some other stuff.

Gary if the nightclubs where you live are paying the same as forty years ago, I don't blame you for quitting them. I make more a night than I made in a week forty years ago!

Right, Don ... From what Gary tells us, as far as music gigs go, his area is in a Time Warp ... grin
Good thing it wasn't like that for NH ...

Sounds good Don. I have a hunch you'll fall in love. There's something special about 76. If you have problems, let me know and I have a nice quality wheel padded case that will go with it.

Meanwhile, I am still trying to unload my 3X and that might swing me in a different direction smile

I talked with a good friend and fellow entertainer/musician who still works at one of the most expensive restaurants in Baltimore's Little Italy. He is still being paid $125 for a five hour job on Friday nights and just $100 for four hours on Saturday. That's how things are here, and from what I have learned when I was down south, it was the same in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and most of Florida and the Florida Keys. I guess you northerners get more because you are taxed to oblivion and it cost so much more to live up there where it's cold most of the year. Not too far from DonM, in the Florida Panhandle, the pay scale is about the same as it is along the southeast coast. I have two friends who perform there regularly, both of which have recently switched to the senior circuit for financial reasons.

Thanks for the compliments, Harold and Jim. Throughout most of my life, even when I worked in the medical field, my goal was and has always been to help others. I always felt that the Golden Rule, which was taught to me by my mother, was a good way to live your life.

All the best,

Gary cool

I try to live by the Golden Rule, just not 24 carat....10 carat, maybe......actually, more like gold-plated smile.

Around here, one would be lucky to get $100. for a nursing home job. I was offered $35. last year for one! I guess I should be flattered because they told me their normal rate was $25. Main reason is all the well-meaning wanna-bes that do them for free, thinking they are "helping the old people". All they are helping are the huge companies that own the nursing homes!
Even at a hundred a job, I'd have to do eight or ten a week to survive, and that just won't happen here. Even if it did, that would be way too close to real work. I'm too old to set up and tear down that much, even if the gear is lighter now. And besides, I want to play golf and fish in the daytime and play music at NIGHT! smile Every day is a vacation and has been for about 40 years. Truly blessed!

Don you have been blessed with a good attude and a great life, it shows in all that you do.
Gary you have the secret to living a happy life -- helping others. Helping others brings a type of happiness you cannot buy or create.

It has been said when a man reaches his latter years he becomes a philosopher. I can't help myself. (smile)
