If you must sail, find someone to go with you, even if you have to hire them.

I've been trying to sell the boat for two years, but he only two couples interested didn't have any money.

I would take Carol with me, but she is in worst physical condition than I am. She had difficulty accessing the main cabin and finds it difficult to get on and off the boat, even at the dock. If I took her on a cruise ship, I would spend all my time pushing her around in a wheel chair.

One of the biggest problems in trying to sell the boat is the expense of owning a relatively large sailing yacht. Slip rent for the warmer months is $2,200, while winter storage runs about $800. Add to that the cost of insurance, maintenance and upkeep and you are looking at $4,000 a year if you never leave the dock.

Once you leave the dock, the costs are minimal. Just food, booze and ice and you can sail around the world on this boat if you wish - yes, it's that big. Of course, you will spend some bucks for entering ports of various countries, of which, Panama is likely the most expensive.

Now, my children do not want the boat, though I offered to give it to them. They don't want the expense of owning a sailing Yacht, and my son wants a boat that goes fast. The top speed of his powerboat is 50 MPH, while my sailboat's top speed is just 10 MPH.

My daughter's room mate said she wants to go with me on the shakedown cruise, and possibly sail to the Florida Keys with me in October. Carol said that's fine with her, but Carol will not be living on the boat - PERIOD!

Gary I'm talking ocean liner cruise

Donny,Carol's knees are so bad that she uses a walker now. And she cannot walk more than 100 feet on level ground with the walker, therefore, if I took her on a cruise ship, which requires lots and lots of walking every day, I would be spending most of my time pushing her around in a wheel chair.

Also, keep in mind that I spent four years in the US Navy and cruised the entire world on a 762-foot heavy cruiser and visited more than 100 countries. I really would rather cruise the world on my own Yacht, instead of riding along as a passenger on an overpriced, floating restaurant and bar. And, I get to select the ports of call and time tables for each day. It's a lot more exciting on a 33-foot sailing yacht where you control everything than riding over the ocean as a passenger on a cruise ship. Additionally,I get to do things that cruise ship passengers never experience. I get to explore small waterways, see nature up close and personal, catch dinner from the deck of the boat and prepare it myself on my own gas grill while anchored in a beautiful creek or cove while watching the sun dip into the ocean behind the palm trees. I can stay in one location as long as I wish, come home when I feel like it, go snorkeling in gin clear water, and watch the world go by in slow motion. You cannot do any of those things on a cruise ship. To top it off, all of this cost next to nothing. And, the I get to eat as the Captain of the ship, while at the same time, being the ship's chef.

Now, I probably will not be on the internet very often, mainly because finding free access to the internet has become a bit difficult during the past few years. But, once in a while you come across an area where a small town, or major city, offers free internet, such as Baltimore, Annapolis, Miami, etc... Then I can connect, upload photos, check email, and post stuff here, which is the reason I carry a laptop onboard the boat. Not being on the internet, however, is not a bad thing, especially when there are so many other things to see and do while sailing.

Actually, compared to other forms of vacation, a luxury liner cruise, dollar for dollar, is one of your best vacation values ... AND a lot less work ...
Granted, there is a lot of satisfaction in "going on your own", and it has its time and place ...

At this point in my life, all things considered, I like to eat a great steak, but I don't have to kill the steer ...

Tony, I still consume filet mignon, but additionally, I catch my own fish, shrimp and lobster, which is a lot of fun. And, the quality of fresh cooked seafood is beyond your wildest dreams. On top of it all, I can go anyplace that cruise ship can go at a fraction of the cost.
