Well not really. It's just that this song consists mainly (95%) of two chords smile. Except for a simple little 4 bar thingy, it's just C/Bb. Heck, even Gary could play it smile smile kidding, kidding. To keep it 'Arranger related', the horns are from my ancient Tyros 2 and the over-reverbed sax is from my obsolete PA1x Pro. The Vibes, though, are from my wonderful, fantastic, sweet, heavenly, beautiful, soul-stirring, and oh yeah OVERPRICED, Crumar SEVEN. I have to get Russ to teach me some authentic VIBE licks.

BTW, this was done in one take, mistakes and all.....nah, just messing with Donny smile smile. Old tune by Benny Golson - Killer Joe.

Good job, Chas. Nice clean arrangement of this old jazz tune.

Chas wrote the other day that he considers himself rank amateur. After listening to this recording, that make me wonder what am I? But seriously I did enjoy your arrangement Chas. Hope hear more. Thanks!

Thanks Gary and Don and Fran. Fran, I'm glad someone else took a shot at this unconventional (for this forum) tune; I tried to pick something simple enough that others would give it a try. We used to play it a lot 'cause it's one of those tunes you can 'nurse' for 10 minutes or more on a jazz gig smile.

Fran, nice effort, although in all honesty, I didn't care for the continuous sustained chords playing throughout in the background....just stylistic differences, though. Some people think I (everyone) should stay true to Benny's signature bass line which is probably what propelled it to popularity in the first place. Oh well, in the words of our fearless leader (DNJ), 'you have to make it your own'.

Don't let chas fool you ... I've heard some of his other work ... He could easily fit in with any jazz combo ...

smile Good ear Tony, yeah, I have to admit I stole it from the piano player on the original Benny Golson performance. Dammit, I thought I got away with it too. Damn musician critics smile.

Hey, I'm just glad my ears weren't failing me ... grin

Nothing wrong with taking a 'quote' from someone else ... after all, that guy got it from Gershwin didn't he? ... wink
I enjoy hearing musicians do that, and I like it even better when I pick up on it ...

Chas, I love the grove -- and your impro goes right with the feel.

Well done, John C.

I've gone back and listened to Benny Golson's original version ... I always marvel at how good Jazz Musicians can take long, interesting, and well played solos based on two chords ...

KILLER! Now, if we could just get Rachelle to sing....wait, there are no words....wouldn't matter, anyway...no one here can understand a word she sings!

My vote for the best post of the year. I'm going to send it to Blue Note right away!
