I play pedals, but I don't see the correlation. He isn't playing bass pedals in the traditional sense.

He is using pedals for drum sounds..not an auto arranger.

As long as they're not Red Sox..

But seriously, I've seen that in public performances in clubs and though it may be necessary, its not a good look..

Playing them with normal shoes just doesnt work..
Its to slippery, you want to commect to them pedals
So either sox, or special organ shoes..
