I've decided to rip the keys off my old 900, and reform the guts into a module ... WITH the speakers. I intend to sit it above my SV-1 in the studio to give me arranger/rhythm/sequence, and vocal capabilities. Fran and I had a friend who did this all the time to his keyboards. In fact, often times, he'd buy 2 of the same piece, and take one apart right away ... for fun. He was a bit of an electrical guru for me - used to repair airplane engines, I think. Cool guy, good musician, played and sang into his 90s.
So ... any tips on making a good solid, compact cabinet for the upper end of the PA900? I've had it open many times, and I already know that the entire area where the keys reside is free from the main circuits. I'm thinking I'll simply take out the keybed, cut the body of the unit an build a thin wooden case to house the entire top section, including the speakers.
Then, I'll try to match the color (RED, of course) on the SV-1. I'm in no rush to do this, but kind of excited to have a custom rig as my main studio controller.

Thoughts?

That's pretty. Mine will have to be longer to keep the speakers.

Hi Dave,
What a great idea.
I ‘d considered pulling my old pa800 apart, apparently doesn’t seam to be working properly according to my son. Just have to get it back off him. If it isn’t working all that well anyway, no harm done if I pull it apart.

It’s my pa3x, I’d like turned into a module, but personally not game to try and do that to it.

Fascinated to see how you go.

In the end didn't do it, because being affraid loosing to much money on it.
I dont think a module like this will be an easy sale...

Agreed, but this keyboard has issues with the keybed, so it's unsaleable, as-is. All the internals work fine, so the logical choice is to capitalize on it's strengths.
I've seen the insides, and I'm pretty sure I can cut the entire section where the keys reside, and just re-box the top section to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
I'm actually kind of excited to try this.

I know you want to keep the speakers, but if its for your studio setup, why not make it smaller, without them, and create two speaker boxes around them as well which can be remotely placed?

Painted lexan or similar works well..just need the right jigsaw and blade to work with to avoid cracking.

I had a custom made module for my acoustic / midi Piermaria accordion .
it was originally a Yamaha PSR3000 arranger keyboard .
The speakers were also removed making it slightly shorter and lighter , all keys removed .
it fits neatly into a specially made flight case with my musictech midi receiver and also my receiver for my Sennheiser radio head band mic ..

Arriving at my gig I place the module on a stand , remove the lid , plug into speaker leads , and the mains plug !! all set up and ready to gig !!

I wish I had done this many years ago !!…………

I love the idea of hearing the SV-1 and the 900 tones coming right into my face ... before they head to their final destination. The SV-1 is long enough to accomodate the new module nicely on top. I'm thinking of building a custom cabinet, too ... kinda like an organ chassis.
