My 8 yr old iPad has older system and 16GB about used up. Rather than clean out unused apps, I opted for the latest on sale at Amazon, 9.7, 32GB. Before it arrives, I have to decide what to do with the old one that has my sheet music, MP3s etc. What I have on it works fine, and am tempted to leave it alone and start with some newer music apps on the new. or transfer some.
I don't want to waste the new capacity with redundant data, but wonder if having two will cause confusion with iTunes when it comes to uploading material. What have some of you done?

I keep my old iPad as a back up. Apple has made it simple to make a clone of your old ipad. When firing up the new iPad chosse the copy from old iPad , it will then walk you thru a procedure using your new iPad’s camera to copy the moving circle on the old iPad. From there the devices take over and you just can sit back and wait for the copy to complete.
I have an iPad with 16 GB and it is now relegated to being used for taking photos, playing solitaire and chess. My words of warning to you, Bernie... be sure to write down all the security questions they ask you, remember your new user ID and password by hiding them away somewhere you can find them. If you change internet service providers... you will be in for a "merry go round" of mind numbing stupidity from Apple regarding security.
They automatically assume your iPad has been stolen and their system is not set up to deal with humans. Most of their hired hands are offshore and really enjoy putting the screws to Americans. If I can't get these idiots to come to their senses soon, I will "jailbreak" my iPad (it does belong to me, after all) and install another operating system on it.
If you surmise that I am angry with them... it would be a correct assumption! LOL!

If you really want to dive into music apps, 32 GB might be not enough...
You can have many apple devices on a single account, and all sync them with the same data..

Thanks, Bachus, but I am a newbe who, realistically will not, anywhere near, approach your involvement anytime soon. To go for a 64gb or a Pro would have meant too much money for a pipe dream. If I run out of capacity, that will tell me to get a big boy iPad.
For the time being, I would appreciate some advice along the way. I am thinking of using the new one for new apps, and leaving my old on as is.

Just throw in the questions, and i will see to answer them.. Starting fresh could be a good idea..
Just make sure you switch software sync off between the 2 devices, or everything you install on the new device will also end up on the old device... by default i believe this is switched on..

I’ve got 2 iPads. Don’t think l’ll be upgrading anymore with iPads. Bought a Dell 3000 2 in 1 11.6 screen running Windows 10. It has a 500gb hard drive and 8gb ddr4 ram. Runs as a tablet or laptop and can run all my daw software. Bought at Office Depot for $229. All of this in a small easy to use package.

Pretty pleased so far.

As long as you dont want/need all the creativity tools the ipad houses for creating and performing... a windows hybris is a better choice..
It runs daw, vst, all yamaha community tools, sheetreader...
The ipad offers to me a whole different more creative alternative, its espescially a lot of fun to me..

Since these are not productive or creative apps, it would be interesting to know what you find fun using iPad.
I have a love/hate relationship with iPads. I love the stability, but hate the awkward process of uploading, even though I somewhat understand the concept of iTunes. The main reason I am sticking with them is that the bulk of new and existing apps are written for this platform.

If you can't beat em--- It seems to me that you have to start with an interface. My old Muse Receptor had some of these elements or scenes to assemble a song from many different sources. It is in beta now, but looks promising. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFKqMhRRORA $19 ios

If I were to do Apple again, it would have to be a MacBook. Price for those is ridiculous. The Dell gives you HDMI, USB 3, USB 2, which allows for USB mic recording, and audio interface connection. For $229...can't beat it!

Apple pricing has gotten out of hand it's all for their bottom line. 10 years ago I bought a refurbished MacBook Pro for just over $1000 it's still running although I did replace the battery and added an SSD to it. That same laptop today would cost $2500 maybe $2300 as a refurb.
On the flip side of things a few SZ members purchased a Pro12 Android tablet with a detachable keyboard for less than $200 and it does a great job syncing with the Korg Songbook for lead sheets.

Just start out with audiobus 3 and midiflow Thats the base of all the fun.. It connects your keyboard to multiple apps and soundsources at once
From there you start building.. With for example beatmaker 3 for creating backings Cubasis for recording And korg gadget for a huge amount of little soundmodules..
And there is more, like dsp effects, arpegiators.. everything is available on ipad except a good arranger And audiobus turns all those lovely things into one big soundmachine
Its effectively a midi and audiorouter.. Wish there was a simple app like this for macosx or windows.. But there isnt..

Bernie, I bought the iPad pro(the large one) when it first came out and have not had a single regret. I use it only for my gig PDF lead sheets. I have not looked at the current versions of the iPad pro.
I use two programs for reading the PDFs. One is UnRealBook and the other is GoodReader. Both do a wonderful job but I have found I like UnRealBook the best.
For my backups I use a program called Imazing. There version I use is free but you can upgrade it if you need or want the added features.
FYI: I now have the Ketron SD40 and am using a 49 key M-Audio controller with it. I like it a lot and it is very reliable. I got the one with nothing on it but what the factory puts on it.

Hi Deane I am currently using UnRealbook for my lead sheets on my old Ipad with no problems at all, and use Mobilsheets Pro in my Pro 12 Android, so I will leave these as is. I have M-Audio 61, Novation 61 SL MKII, and Behringer UMA25 for controllers, but favor my Hammond SK1 for use with the SD40. I am happy you are getting on with your SD40.

Donny, I will be using my new SD40 for gigs after Christmas. Right now I am using my Yamaha S975 for all my Christmas gigs. I will video one of my SD40 gigs.

A valid point as far as backup is concerned, but I am looking at Audiobus 3,Camelot Pro, and Imazing. I am trying to be careful of duplication and wasting limited iPad capacity.

Camelot pro, offers the same as audiobus with midiflow.. Audiobus offers much much more, but is less straightforward..
Camelot pro only supports au units... and not the dsp ones Audiobus also allows the connection of daws to eachother
In my vision, if you have audiobus, you dont need camelot pro Unless you aim of integrating your ipad with a pc/mac daw.. and another camelot pro client on them.. or if you have hardware specifically supported by camelot.. which currently only supports synthesizers and high end workstations

I have Audobus on IOS and Gig Performer in PC. I am working on getting Kontakt VST in GP. My question is some way to utilize my EastWest Colossus that was installed on my old Muse Receptor(gone). It seems a shame that some use can't be made of an expensive sample library like this.

Bernie
If you have a key to the software And an account at east west
Contact them and ask them
Collosus works as a vst in any pc or mac

Soundsonline, who is handling EW support, suggested a $99 crossgrade to Goliath in the Play 6 wrapper, available for instant download. What do you think? I read Play 6 eliminated some of the problems of previous versions. I could use this just for a rompler if not with Gig Performer. Bernie

Since I have only 80gb available, how about downloading to SD or flash drive. I could get a 7200 SSD, but I guess I would have a bottleneck with my i7 5400 HD. For my needs, I wouldn't think it necessary, but what do I know.

An external SSD works well for sample libraries.. Stay away from 7200 HD’s go for a real SSD And only keep the programs on your main drive..
