I have no problem with someone playing over backing tracks. I also have no problem with Chas expressing his opinion.
Thank you for that. I appreciate your open-mindedness. I HOPE that is the attitude of the majority of our members. Opinions are just that, OPINIONS.....not FACTS, and they are almost always subjective. On this specific post, let me be clear. I KNOW that Frank is a more than competent player but probably no more so than a thousand other jazz organist out there. I have no problem with a Synthzone member using a backing track to showcase some other skill such as vocals or solo instrument (such as in THIS video) but that's because for the most part, we are all amateurs or hobbyist and it's nice to be able to display a level of skill above the average 'guy on the street'. I also think backing tracks are also ok for many product demonstrations where the product is the focus and not a commercial music production. I think backing tracks are also okay to use on a gig in the proper venue (although I personally would probably not be going to that venue). We also know that a mediocre musician who knows a few hot licks can sound spectacular over a good backing track (which is why even some superstar pro's will use them in concerts (but not in a club setting)).
My thinking is that if you're posting a music performance that is not you nor fits any of the above categories, then at the very least it should be a 'live' performance' and probably accompanied by an explanation of WHY it was posted (on an arranger forum). But again, that's just an OPINION. There is absolutely NO requirement to agree with it (just as there is no requirement to LIKE every random YT video someone posts). To be perfectly honest, I prefer selecting my own viewing preferences. For instance, if I want to hear jazz organ I just go to the YouTube search box and type in 'jazz organ'. If I want to hear some good Country, I can go to the Synthzone Search box and type in 'Don Mason'
, if I just want to hear/read some extraneous bullshit, I can go to the Synthzone Search box and type in 'cgiles'
.
