Thanks fellows for all the info. These are probably great speakers you're recommending, but the glitches are you have to hope you can find them locally to audition. Mail order is like using the old "pony express" and then hoping you don't have to return them out of dislike.

I had a good "think" about all your recommendations. I'm realizing things like I don't have room around my desk for studio monitor speakers...and....I think I prefer a 2.1 system with the satellites ON my desk like I have now.

These Logitechs look pretty good. Can someone watch this video at this point:

Logitech speaker video

....and tell me what this "glitch" is about and would it affect me?

And, finally, I think I'm going to go with Logitechs since they have a good name and good tech support and I can listen to them at my local Staples. Does anyone have a comment on which one to focus on? Otherwise, I'll go down there and listen to them all.

Z623 sound great. I've had a Z2200, a predecessor, set in my studio for many years. Also have a Z5100 in tv room, but it has so many speakers it is troublesome to move around. It is extremely powerful.
I played a few nursing homes with the 2200s and they did fine for up to 40 or so people.
Logitech customer support is fantastic.

Like Don, I have the Z623 on my desk, and used the Z2200 for years. I still use the sub from the Z2200 when I need one on gigs. You can't go wrong.

Yes, I think I'm going to go with Logitech. They make a good product for the money and their backup tech support should be a role model for all other companies.

I've narrowed it down to these:

LOGITECH MODELS

Z625 Speaker System with Subwoofer and Optical Input Powerful THX Sound $ 169.99
Z623 Speaker System with Subwoofer Captivating THX Sound $ 149.99
Z506 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System Surround Sound Speakers $ 99.99

Do either of you have a suggestion that would help me to decide? The speakers will stay stationary so the 5.1 looks tempting. On the other hand, I don't need more clutter on or near my desk.

Do you have space for a 5.1 system (3 speakers in front, 2 behind + sub) and the appropriate outputs on your computer?
Does your computer have an optical out? If so the DAC built into the speakers may be better than the one built into the computer (Although depending on the computer age it may not) so worth the extra. (Or not)
If possible try them out first.

Since they all have good reviews, it seems to me that the extra dollars for the Z623 and Z625 have to do with optical and THX. Whether that outweighs analog surround sound that isn't always noticeable in everyday sound sources, and speaker clutter, is a personal consideration. My first thought was the bass must be lacking in the surround sound, but, apparently, that isn't so, at least, volume wise.

I can understand the quandary.

In that case, you should consider to take a look at Z533 or similiar as well.
Stereo and a good bass (2.1) does great for music and PC use,
5.1 is more useful if watch movies.

I have the Z-333 speakers. They sound incredible. Back when i was just a little boy i used the X-230 and Z-2300 and ever since then i'm hooked to Logitech.

The Z-333 was just about $50 for me and i'm glad i spent it on that instead of the Edifier or Trust crap.

Well, I read and assimilated everything everyone wrote here. It was a big help....comments on
"the purity of studio monitors (might be too clean"......."5.1 will take up space"....A-1 recommendations from the Logitech speaker users.

I also called Logitech Sales Dept at their company headquarters and he walked me through them model by model. I finally decided what's right for me would be the Z623 or the Z625 (updated Z623). They run 200W RMS and the satellite speakers look like they'll fit nicely near my desk.

I'm hoping they sound as good as my 15 year old ones. New doesn't always mean better!

By coincidence, I found this in today's paper. Makes you stop and think twice what you're getting into when you make a technology involved purchase of an item!

Amazon and Google.....Logitech, etc
