About 15 years ago, I bought a set of Logitech speakers for my computer for like $50. They sounded fantastic, but they're just wearing out now. I went down to Staples to listen to another set, but they're not hooked up on the shelf. The top of the line is only $100. Heck, I can't buy a Whopper meal at Burger King for that!

My needs are clarity (I listen to a lot of Opera and Classical music), and guts (I also listen to a lot of Blues and Rock and the "down and dirty" heavy stuff).

Also thinking why not buy studio monitors for the computer?

Anyone have experience with the Logitech home speakers. I'm not going to make a big project out of this. Just want something that does the job well, but falls short of perfection.

I can highly recommend Genelec 8010 (the more powerful successors to the 6010). They are small and powerful and, as you know, Genelec is a top monitor brand. Bass is also amazing for the size.
Eve Sc203 are also very good, not as loud as Genelec 8010 though.
Cheaper alternative are Bose Companion 20, which sound decent as well.

LOGITECH Z623 2.1 PC Speakers should fit your requirements at a mid price point.

Most of the cheaper computer speakers are designed for games rather than music, however people still buy the matching speakers for the Genos & Pa4x which suck big time, so the Logitech’s will probably do you fine if this is what you are after.
Active studio monitors are designed for sound accuracy so may be too revealing for your ears, but on the flip side most come with controls to modify them to your room and personal preference. (Best to pop down to a local music store and have a listen to a few)
No one can choose speakers for you as everybody hears things different, which is why it is vital to try before you buy.

Buy a set of studio monitors , gives a lifetime pleasure .
If you dont want to Use a sub woofer , you can start from 6" woofers . A very good choice is the Yamaha HS7 , and affordable.

You can certainly start from 3‘‘ woofers, that‘s what the Genelec 8010 have...

With all this info I didn't consider before, I'm going to do one of two things.

a) do a day trip to SA and GC (luckily right across the street)and audition what they have on demo

b) if that doesn't work, then it's.......buy a TOTL Logitech unit and hope for the best

I dread buying anything these days. Just too many choices. My life is run by "Consumer Reports" magazine! I just wish they would review computer speakers!

I've been using these for 30 years. Still sound fantastic. https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/319414/YSTMS50_1.pdf

Thanks fellows for all the info. These are probably great speakers you're recommending, but the glitches are you have to hope you can find them locally to audition. Mail order is like using the old "pony express" and then hoping you don't have to return them out of dislike.

I had a good "think" about all your recommendations. I'm realizing things like I don't have room around my desk for studio monitor speakers...and....I think I prefer a 2.1 system with the satellites ON my desk like I have now.

These Logitechs look pretty good. Can someone watch this video at this point:

Logitech speaker video

....and tell me what this "glitch" is about and would it affect me?

And, finally, I think I'm going to go with Logitechs since they have a good name and good tech support and I can listen to them at my local Staples. Does anyone have a comment on which one to focus on? Otherwise, I'll go down there and listen to them all.

Z623 sound great. I've had a Z2200, a predecessor, set in my studio for many years. Also have a Z5100 in tv room, but it has so many speakers it is troublesome to move around. It is extremely powerful.
I played a few nursing homes with the 2200s and they did fine for up to 40 or so people.
Logitech customer support is fantastic.

Like Don, I have the Z623 on my desk, and used the Z2200 for years. I still use the sub from the Z2200 when I need one on gigs. You can't go wrong.

Yes, I think I'm going to go with Logitech. They make a good product for the money and their backup tech support should be a role model for all other companies.

I've narrowed it down to these:

LOGITECH MODELS

Z625 Speaker System with Subwoofer and Optical Input Powerful THX Sound $ 169.99
Z623 Speaker System with Subwoofer Captivating THX Sound $ 149.99
Z506 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System Surround Sound Speakers $ 99.99

Do either of you have a suggestion that would help me to decide? The speakers will stay stationary so the 5.1 looks tempting. On the other hand, I don't need more clutter on or near my desk.

Do you have space for a 5.1 system (3 speakers in front, 2 behind + sub) and the appropriate outputs on your computer?
Does your computer have an optical out? If so the DAC built into the speakers may be better than the one built into the computer (Although depending on the computer age it may not) so worth the extra. (Or not)
If possible try them out first.

Since they all have good reviews, it seems to me that the extra dollars for the Z623 and Z625 have to do with optical and THX. Whether that outweighs analog surround sound that isn't always noticeable in everyday sound sources, and speaker clutter, is a personal consideration. My first thought was the bass must be lacking in the surround sound, but, apparently, that isn't so, at least, volume wise.

I can understand the quandary.

In that case, you should consider to take a look at Z533 or similiar as well.
Stereo and a good bass (2.1) does great for music and PC use,
5.1 is more useful if watch movies.

I have the Z-333 speakers. They sound incredible. Back when i was just a little boy i used the X-230 and Z-2300 and ever since then i'm hooked to Logitech.

The Z-333 was just about $50 for me and i'm glad i spent it on that instead of the Edifier or Trust crap.

Well, I read and assimilated everything everyone wrote here. It was a big help....comments on
"the purity of studio monitors (might be too clean"......."5.1 will take up space"....A-1 recommendations from the Logitech speaker users.

I also called Logitech Sales Dept at their company headquarters and he walked me through them model by model. I finally decided what's right for me would be the Z623 or the Z625 (updated Z623). They run 200W RMS and the satellite speakers look like they'll fit nicely near my desk.

I'm hoping they sound as good as my 15 year old ones. New doesn't always mean better!

By coincidence, I found this in today's paper. Makes you stop and think twice what you're getting into when you make a technology involved purchase of an item!

Amazon and Google.....Logitech, etc

i find it incredible that serious musicians recommend a set of computer speakers to listen to music, these sets are made to play games and videos on your computer not to display a well-defined sound that you can produce with the current instruments.
Good speakers are a major investment, but you have a lot of fun for a long time.

I agree with everything you said. But....

......speaking in practical terms, the days of finding top-quality anything these days is over. You have to settle for what you can get and hope it fits your needs. A lot of us have been playing long enough to understand...shopping in a fully stocked music store and trying out the different products has gone out with land-line phones.

In the case of speakers, I'd be happy if I can even get these Logitechs I decided to buy. They don't stock them in the stores, I'm going to have to order them and hope they sound decent and I don’t have to waste time in returning them.

Then there's the "too much...too many...too confusing" scene. I went into Sam Ash last year intent on listening to monitor speakers for my every day listening sound system. Wasted hours because they must have had over a dozen monitors on demo. In the end, I couldn't hear a difference in any of them. Now I jump from the frying pan into the fire. I went to the pro instrument speakers dept (JBL, EV, etc) and listened to them. I could hear the difference this time, but whatever you buy is going to sound different with your keyboard and on the job (different rooms, number of people you're playing to, etc.). That translates to more futile hours looking for the "Holy Grail" of professional performance speakers.

Right now I'm trying to find comfortable shoes. I've been wearing SAS Time Out's for 20 years now. They're almost $200 a pair (most waiters wear them). SAS stopped making them and I've been spending hours going from store to store looking for TOTL shoes. to replace them. More time I don’t have! At this point, I'd be content to just have shoes with soles. Never mind TOTL shoes.

You could easily spend whatever days you have left searching for the perfect "anything." But manufacturers and retail stores and consumers now work around the Internet. You shop on line, you buy online, you return the goods online, and in between you spend more time figuring out if the credit card numbers are correct when the statement comes!

Coming back to your point. Again.....I agree. with your comments. However, I used to be a perfectionist with whatever I needed. Nowadays, I’m reformed…..I’m happy to have something that just works, like generic speakers.” Just not enough time to shop for the best of the best anymore.
