Most of yesterday was spent at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center's ER with Carol. There were just over 20 ppl in the waiting room, and all but two, myself and another old guy, had a smart phone in their hand. They ignored everything that was going on around them and their thumbs were rapidly pounding and scrolling their touch screens. I consider this an addiction at the very least.

Sadly, I see this same activity in my grandson and my step grand daughters. They would be in a state of panic if the battery died, or God forbid, they leave their phones at home. Thankfully, my daughter took my grandson's smart phone away from him and now he spends most of his tie outdoors playing baseball, football and other games with the other kids in his neighborhood that are not I-phone addicted.

A few weeks ago, Carol and I went to a nearby restaurant to have dinner. Sitting next to us was a young couple in their early 20s. The girl was drop-dead gorgeous, the young man was clean shaven and, according to Carol, quite handsome. They were both glued to their I-phones. When I was young, and dating Carol, the very last thing I would have been looking at was the screen of a smart phone. Hell, they may even have been texting to each other because that was the only way they knew how to communicate. wink

Just My Opinion,

Gary (the old dude)

I have not turned mine on since yesterday when I called my daughter to tell her that we were on our way home from the hospital. So, I guess it doesn't rule everyone's life - just the folks that cannot see anything beyond their touch screens. wink

The only reason I purchased a smart phone was for safety purposes. I use mine hands free with a blue-tooth ear receiver while driving. The main reason I purchased the phone was for the weather radar app and marine navigational app. My boat has radar, but the range is just 25 miles. I need to know there is a thunderstorm coming from a much greater distance than 25 miles, because the boat's top speed is just 10 MPH. Most thunderstorms travel at 35 to 55 MPH. If the storm is moving at 55 MPH, and I see it on my ship's radar, I only have 30 to find a sheltered creek or cove before the storm hits me. If I see it on the app, and it's 100 miles away, the app tells me the speed and direction of travel, giving me a far better margin of time to reach safety and drop the anchor.

The Navionics app provides me with a backup for my GPS Plotter, which is my primary, and most accurate, navigational tool. If my ship's GPS/Plotter goes out, the phone provides me a backup.

Finally, when I'm on the boat, I can keep up with all the stuff going on here at the Zone. smile

It's a different world out there today.

Now it's "not cool" if you aren't on your cell phone. crazy

Gotta go now. I have to answer another scam call on my cell phone.

Admission: I don't even have a cell phone.

Gary, maybe all those other folks in the waiting room were in there about their carpal tunnel syndrome. wink

Just read an article in a computer magazine about a new Android
smart phone battery that is 4 times more powerful than a normal battery. After singing it`s praises,it concludes the article with
"Apparently it`ll last 50 days on standby, but we`re not sure who
in 2019 puts their phone down for a month".

Nothing wrong with owning a cell phone. Mine stays in my car most of the time, turned off. When I want to make a call I turn it on -- after talking I turn it off.

TODAY...
I used my cell phone for all this.
Phone calls
Texts
Compass (see which way the wind was blowing while fishing)
Camera, to take picture of the first fish of the day. Of the year too. smile
Weather Radar
I called my boat guy from the lake to see how to adjust power steering. Saved a trip and $$.
Listen to audio book while waiting in Dr. office. And in car via Bluetooth on the way there.
Deposit check
Check calendar to check date of Mother's Day.

I also use it for a Hotspot to connect my laptop to the internet while traveling or at work. It made me a hundred bucks Friday night, but being able to look up lyrics and chords to a song I really didn't know.
I also use it for GPS in my car. App is WAZE and it is free and works way better than dedicated GPS units. Updated daily.
I was able to call my wife from the golf course and tell her to meet me at the ER last year! I probably should have called ambulance instead.
If I'm away from home and an idea for a song, or someone's name I want to remember or lots of other things, I touch the voice recorder and make notes to myself.
I can almost instantly speak with any or all of my kids and their families, even my wife. smile
There is much more I'm forgetting right now...
The phone saves me time and money. A lot of both.

HOWEVER, I don't use it while eating, driving (much) or talking to people in person. I seldom access the internet with it. I never use it for Facebook except occasionally upload a photo.

Like others, I see families and couples sit and play games or talk or surf while "enjoying" a dinner with average price about $75 each.
It's a tool. Yes you can misuse it. I don't.
I have no problem with anyone who doesn't use cell phones, but don't want to be criticized for choosing to use mine.

And, yes, WAZE is probably THE BEST GPS app ...

I think i miss the most important one..

On stage one should never pee heir pants
Not from abuse of alcoholics
Not from fear for the audience
And not from old age...

Espescially not as a singer..
Maybe the keyboardist sitting in the dark corner with dark pants on can come away with it..

But then the pleasure of peeing your pants quickly turns from a warm feeling into a cold one.. so i dont think peeing your pants on stage is a good idea even for a keyboardist.

While on break I held my smartphone up, and everyone on the dance floor started posing.
I was just taking a selfie of me and the singer. grin
