I'm betting it's a controller that triggers a massive rig under the stage, manned by a full time tech/programmer. All it needs to have is a hidden USB cable, tucked into that tubing.

I saw them in concert about a year ago, and saw that keyboardist and stand in action. and there is a keyboard (controller?) in there as someone mentioned. He sometimes "spun" that stand like crazy, so I wonder if it is wirelessly connected to the rack? Or, he can only spin is X times then has to spin it back the other way??

The more I look at these photos, maybe he has two different kinds of stands? The one I saw with Styx at the concert I attended, had a central post/pole going to the floor, and it spin on that. Some of these photos seem to show a different stand, supported "From the side" ...
