The Girl from Ipanema
Words & Music by Vincius De Moraes & Antonio Carlos Jobim English lyrics by Norman Gimbel
Recorded by Stan Getz, 1964 (#5), vocal by Astrid Gilberto
FM7 G7
Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking,
Gm7 F#7 FM7 F#7
And when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Ahhh."
FM7 G7
When she walks, she's like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gentle,
Gm7 F#7 FM7
That when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Ahhh."

F#+7 F#7 C9 F#m7 D9
Oh, but I watch her so sadly; How can I tell her I love her?
Gm Gm7
Yes, I would give my heart gladly,
Am7 Dm7-5
But each day when she walks to the sea,
Gm7 F#
She looks straight ahead, not at me.

FM7 G7
Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking,
Gm7 F#7
And when she passes, I smile,
FM7 F#7 FM7 F#7
But she doesn't see, no she doesn't see,
FM7
No she doesn't see.
EDIT: The chords are spaced correctly before I post, but are bunched together after posting.

Well okay then, I guess it's okay to just make it up as we go. I like the way you think, guys.

Don, I'm so used to seeing 'maj' that it took me a minute to recognize your CAPITOL 'M' and small 'm'. At first I thought, 'are you kidding me, he's starting with an f MINOR?'. Of course after the brain freeze thawed smile ...... In fact, I'm going to start notating that way (I'll take the easy way to do ANYTHING smile ). There are so many shortcuts in music notation, it's hard to remember them all. I guess you just have to adopt your own system and stick to it. I wish some of the notation software would allow for 'custom' shortcuts. Most don't.

Not to send Donny's post south, perhaps you could start another thread telling us what substitutions or additions you might use?

Whether my audience knows or not, I take personal pride in knowing that I'm playing the correct chords (at least most of the time wink ) ... I really can't (or don't want to) believe anyone else on this board feels differently ...

Tony lets face it...no one is perfect...close enough will have to do, as long as it sounds really good and you can do that easily and I assume you know that after so many years like many of us know playing for audiences..simplified versions, omitted Original beginning verses, and on and on it goes. Making a song your own does include using whatever chords you like. I have heard man so called pros use the so called correct chords and still sound like crap,....
there is more to it then just playing the right chords imo.
And I also think criticism should be backed up with example of which many here never do, it definitely ends the argument, talk is cheap.
That said Gary makes sense in many ways..
