Hi ,
Just had my sx900 and p121 delivered.
Keybed has a better feel than on my Psrs 950. Not that cheap clicky feel.
Good layout.
Haven’t had a chance to crank the volume up on it, hubby’s having his afternoon snooze.. haha.

For me it was definitely worth upgrading from the s950.

Off to unpack the piano.

Thank you Donny,
I’ll report back later. Still unpacking the piano. Got the demo running, sounds pretty good.
The stand is going to take a bit of putting together . Haha. May need help from hubby if I can tear him away from his Destiny game.

Hi Rikki, the things that excite us, ahhhhh.
As you get into it, I am interested to know how the key/feel is comparing it to piano or semi/weighted feel. I liked the Genos feel, not completely piano, but semi weighted was an improvement, (my old piano teaching)
Also the "Songlist" access, how easy is it?
I found the Genos a disaster having to scroll all the way, without alphabet, or some other quick way to find what was needed.
Just for starters !!!

No alphabetical listing stinks...on the sx900 can you at least have songs listed by
genre like korg on the songlist? or?

Just what I wanted to hear. SO looking forward to the arrival in the US. You're a lucky gal, Rikki! I think that is one killer setup.
Stage, studio, or home - it's got so much "ooomph!"

Thank you Everyone.
Didn’t get a great deal of time yesterday to spend on it. Granddaughter’s birthday so we went out in the afternoon.
Yep, Xmas came early. Haha

Sorry Ray and Donny, not familiar with song list functions, my psrs950 basically sat unused for years, only started playing it a few weeks back ,and I didn’t bother learning any additional functions because I was planning on upgrading.

I’ll go thru the manual and try and work out how it works .
When I pressed the button about 6 songs popped up, a mix of midifiles with score, and styles with text files.Thinking maybe I was in some sort of Demo mode. Only had a few minutes on it, so I’ll try and spend a bit of time on it later today.

Hi Dave, the piano is great, unfortunately I am going to have to keep them in seperate rooms till I sell at least one more of my keyboards. It’s a nice looking unit with the optional stand and pedals, so currently will be living in the lounge room. The rest of 5he keyboards are wall to wall in a bedroom/ music room. Haha

Personally I am happy with the keybed on the sx900, I think the keys are still the same size as on the s950 ( I can check that if you want) but have a better action/feel about them. With an extra octave I think I could even play those left hand arpeggio songs I wanted the piano for. The psrs950 never felt right for that .

Anyway, in a nutshell, for me it’s been like upgrading from my pa3x to Pa4x. Better overall sound , better keybed, new functions, the styles sound more dynamic, and I did listen thru headphones as well, albeit they’re not a brilliant set.
( btw, not comparing it to the Pa4x, just the jump in quality from s950 to sx900)

The scat voices are pretty good. Don’t know how much use I’ll get out of them, but what sprang to mind was Intro’s.

I’ll be back.

Hi Donny,
gather you got your answer on song lists,Etc. from psr forum.

I read the posts, I’m still kind of confused, as I’ve never used song lists on my Korg or Psr . Felt I never needed to as I used to set up my styles with the song name on my Korg , plus it was only for home play.

I had a look thru manual as well, that is going to take me while to work out, but I think this time round I may actually give it a try.

Rikki and/or anyone else who has questions about the playlist feature.

That hoop you have to jump thru to learn playlist is much easier than it appears to be. Simply put you set up registrations as you normally would on any Yamaha arranger. You create a playlist then add the registrations of your choice to it. On my Genos I usually name the playlist for the gig I’m playing. I also have a master playlist where I add all my registrations to it. There’s a slight learning curve but once you set up one the others will be a piece of cake.

Thank you Stephen, there were a number of replies on the other forum, and it just got more and more complicated . Haha.

I’ve never used registrations either, just the ots. But that seems well worth working out.
Had the s950 for about 5 years but never played it till a few weeks back.
Only ever used it for creating backing midi files for my Korg style conversions.

So have a bit of a learning curve in front of me, especially with some of those new functions.
Really enjoying it so far.

Thank you

Congrats on your new instruments!

I can picture that it is in fact overwhelming. While it's a lot of positive emotions, sometimes it can be exhausting for a while.

SX900 is the newest top-of-the-line PSR instrument, and a lot of people find that this sort of instruments is rather complicated. Surely, it's not hard to sit down and play, but it's hard to know that there's a way to use some functions and not to know how. So owning PSR is a sort of commitment.

Owning P121 is a different kind of commitment, it is more of a physical challenge. I have PSR with very light keys and Juno DS with a bit heavier keys, and often I feel that I'm actually lazy to deal with extra resistance. In the end, playing keyboards is not watching a TV-show or eating icecream.

Even when such attractive products like SX900 are captivating, we can not expect to be entertained by it endlessly, especially when the first excitement is over. I don't believe in forcing oneself to play, but I think that staying inspired and motivated has something to do with, well, everything, with what we are dealing with within our minds, with things we are experiencing socially, with music we hear.

I could've said that sometimes you just have to sit down and play, but I just know that there're things that I do, like sitting down and play, and thing which I don't do, like playing with a ball, and this is what I consider to be a big challenge for manufacturers and sellers - no matter how kool is the new PSR, you can't force to play all the people.

But you are surely don't need forcing, I bet, Yamaha is currently disrupting your routine in a major way :-)

I am "green with envy" and wish you hours of playing (and experimenting) contentment with the SX-900. Most of us never really have the time to learn all the features of our arranger keyboards... but it's so good to know they exist.

Have fun! ----West Mayberry Dave

Thank you,
Currently don’t have enough hours in the day either, haha , so much I want to learn.
Lucky for me the luv of hubby’s life, (his PlayStation Destiny game ) had a massive upgrade yesterday, so he is busy too, I don’t have to feel guilty about all the time I’m spending on my keyboards.
Xmas came early for both of us.

Thank you Kabinopus,,
I actually enjoy playing the heavier piano keys. Trying to get myself into some sort of a routine.
I think the piano may be a good way to get me back into practicing and building up my finger strength again.. Some scales , exercises etc Think I may may have found a piano course online that might give me a bit of structure. Doing the free stuff at the moment to see if it’s right for me.That’s my morning routine .

Rest of the day, with what ever spare time I have , I can devote to the new keyboard..

Rikki,
Hope you're having fun with the 900. After watching a few demos, it looks like the screen isn't glass. (is that right?) How's the response to touch?

Most touch screens are made of a combination of plastics and a glass base as the bottom layer. They are all flexible or they would not function.

The glass screen on my 4X is a major improvement over prior models. It's as sensitive as my iPads. I hope technology has caught up to this improvement. Waiting to hear fromRikki on the actual details.

At Genos it's a 9 inch TFT Color Wide VGA LCD Size 800 x 480 dots.
Guess it's something similiar at SX900....
It's a good and responsive screen, top surface feels hard and like glass. Never had any problem during the two years of use.
Regulary cleaning with a soft dustcloth do the trick to keep it as new. 👍

Hi Dave
Unfortunately don’t have the Pa4x to compare it too.
When switched off, has similar look ? to pa3x screen. (Certainly not the same sort of screen as an iPad.)
When switched on, that’s a different matter, much nicer display than pa3x.
Personally not having any problems with the touch response. Quick tap and up it pops.

Found this comparison on the different display types , doesn’t mean much to me personally except for the mention
of “OLED “ on the Genos in the SUB display?
No idea what a sub display is, but having bought a 65 inch OLED tv the other, wow it sure makes a difference to the color and clarity.
The main display seems to be the same except for size on the Genos ( 9 inch display) and sx 900 ( 7 inch display)

Hi Dave, you’re welcome.
Currently going thru my style base, I never bothered tweaking them, as I wasn’t using the psrs 950. I had a number of styles with missing voices, so just put them aside. May have been Tyros styles.

They appear to be working on the sx 900 and sound good. Thinking maybe it’s the scat voices on the sx that were the missing element.

So far I’ve found about 20 or so that don’t appear to be on the sx, unless they’ve given them a totally different name. Manufacturers are sneaky that way. Haha

About the only thing I’m finding a bit frustrating at the moment is the headings they’ve grouped some of the styles under. I suppose it will just be a case of getting used to it. Definitely will use the song book and registrations this time.

Rikki I would first try to setup only using the factory styles
....then afterwards start filtering in the 3rd party and other older
Kb styles from the past,....
yes it takes time but so well worth it in the end.
