For the way I like to play the music I like...quite a bit of it would be great using the 'free style' styles on the SX900 or Genos. So my question is can I make my own free style type styles using the standard built in style creator? Or do styles have to have the drum/rhythm tracks?
AND is there any additional free style styles available?
AND if I have a SX900 can I use Genos freestyle styles on it?

Lee.Select a slow ballad type style, Mute all style parts then un-mute PAD plus other none rhythm parts. You can re-voice to suit.

I’ll have to check when I get up later, but I think majority of free styles existed pre Genos ie only maybe 3 or so brand new ones. New upgrade I think had one.

The T series ones play back quite well on the sx900. How close to the original overall sound, no idea one would need both keyboards, but when I sorted mine ( ie be it a t1,2,3,4,or5) I picked the version that sounded best to me , without any tweaking.
If I end up using one for a tune, I’ll fine tune it if needs be, ie change a sound or adjust a volume.
The Genos ones do play on the sx, they wouldn’t personally be my first choice though , for playback on sx,I thought the t series sounded better on it.

You can record your own styles from scratch. You can also copy and paste style tracks to create your own hybrid ?style.
I can’t imagine you would have to have a drum and rhythm track, as long as you record the correct notes allowable for a style part.

I’ll try a copy and paste style for you later, and see if it needs a drum/rhythm track.

Graham is giving you good advice, although depending on the type of ballad it could still have a rhythmic bass line. You would have to edit the bass track and replace any chromatic sequence with a sustained note that retriggers on demand. A voice like Contrabass or Strings would be appropriate, depending on what you're going to use it for.

There's no "magic" to a free play style. The very first one on the Tyros (3?) was Ethereal Movie, and it played just fine on my PSR-3000. As you and others have surmised, they are characterized by the absence of drum and percussion sounds and lack of a rhythmic beat.

I've made very simple "free play" (rubato) styles for Korg and Roland as well. It gets tricky on a Roland because not all sound samples retrigger reliably if the keys are released and then pressed again in the middle of the style pattern. Unlike almost every other brand, Roland doesn't have a user-accessible retrigger parameter. You can force it to retrigger at measure 1 beat 1 by activating Sync Stop, or you can choose another internal instrument voice that implements the attack and note on messages differently, so the sounds are retriggered by the style engine. I've found Jazz Organ type voices to be excellent in this regard.

I recently experimented with a Casio. I was surprised to find an on-board style called String Quartet that for all intents and purposes is a free play style! They are very useful for pieces that have a time signature change, and also for practicing!

On the Korg Pa4x there were three dedicated buttons;
1-Mute Accomp. 2- Mute Bass 3- Mute drums.

Then I carefully selected four pads that would support the style. I could now use my imagination and make changes to the style I was playing. It is another way to express what I was feeling.

That's Great news!...I can see doing some of those....AND using chord looper to setup a background sequence for a nice orchestral piece.
