Our friend and colleague Capt Russ, who himself has had some medical setbacks lately, now has a new burden to bear.

His son Logan, who I've met on several occasions, was suddenly stricken by a virus-borne condition known as Sudden Respiratory Failure Syndrome and is currently in ICU on life support. Apparently it was touch and go for quite awhile and he is still on life support and unable to breathe on his own. Russ is understandably shaken but trying to tough it out. Logan, aside from being his son, is also a key part of Russ's production company and handles most of the highly technical stuff. Logans's sudden illness plus his own recent medical problems coupled with some pressing (Logan-dependent) business commitments must surely be causing Russ a great deal of stress. Yeah, he's a tough old geezer but I'm sure he could use a little love and support about now.

Hate to always be the bearer of bad news but most of have reached an age where SOME bad news is inevitable.

I talk with Russ daily about this, and sincerely hope that things take a turn for the best. When I talked with him yesterday some of the blood work numbers have improved, and I keep my fingers crossed for his son's recovery.

Russ, it is times like these that show us how little control we have in life. My prayers are for a quick recovery for you and you Son.
If you have a belief of a power above, embrace it with your prayers.

Just talked with Russ, Logan is about the same, slowly improving, had to make a minor adjustment in his oxygen intake level, but his temperature is now below 100, which is a good sign that some of the infectious process seems to be resolving.

Thanks a lot, everyone. So much for my arrogant feeling of invincibility. Man, it's rough to look at your kid, completely paralyzed, swollen, on total life support.

On top of that, one of my sweet puppies was scheduled for surgery to remove a large lump on her chest, and annual dental. Just took her home and am going back to the office. Been sleeping on a small couch in the room for 4 evenings.

This is the same hospital that screwed up my care to the point of being life-threatening, but so far, with a much more complicated case, they have been fabulous.

Didn't know much about SARS or Sudden Respiratory Failure Syndrome (very similar) but recovery is long, difficult; sometimes with lasting damage.

Thing is, in the last three years, I have been transitioning this business into one more suited to Logan's skill set. He is an OK bass player in my jazz group, a great sound engineer, IT man and social media manager. Obviously, that is all going to change.

Thanks so much. Your messages have been the one bright spot in a pretty dark and painful 2020.

Be well, all,

Russ and Logan

Hey Russ, Love ya Man. I'll never forget your phone call, when you just went on with musical and life story telling, that was fascinating. I'm wishing the best for you and your son. Thanks Chas for this update

Russ,
I worked in advertising sales and production for a number of years and, while not in your league, totally understand the stress and pressures due to deadlines and creative expectations. I recall your concern as to the effects on your own health not too long ago. I sincerely hope you are making some adjustments to give yourself some slack. You are SUPER but you are not SUPERMAN.

Russ, in my long life I have only heard the words you wrote twice; there are no words to respond.

My wife and I will be praying for healing for your son Logan, and strength for you. I am so glad that you shared with us.

Russ, I am so sorry to hear about your sons illness, but it is comforting news to hear about his temperature dropping and other symptoms improving. Please look after yourself too as he will need to know you are staying well too.

Talked with Russ this morning, Logan is breathing a bit on his own and his lips were moving as if he was trying to speak, but the induced coma prevents this from happening at this stage. This will slowly improve as the drug induced coma is reduced over the next few days. Russ said he is headed for the office to get a few things done, then go home and sleep in his bed for the first time in a week.
