I talked with Captain Russ this morning, Logan seems to be improving and the docs say that if everything goes as anticipated, he will make a full recovery with no lasting effects of the disease.

He is currently being turned every four hours to help prevent compression sores, which can be a problem with patients that undergo medically induced coma. He is slowly being weened from these medications and Russ says he seems to be responding to conversation, which is great news.

Fortunately, he is constantly being attended by visitors 24/7 who spend days and nights with him at his bedside. This, even while in a comatose condition, though no one can explain it, seems to help speed up the recovery process.

The docs feel he will be in the hospital at least two or more weeks before going home. Once he returns home, he will likely undergo physical therapy at home, then added physical and occupational therapy as a outpatient for a few more months in order to resume normal activities.

All the best,

Gary cool

Just left the hospital, where ?I have been hanging out 24/7, sleeping in a chair in my boy's room. They took him off the paralyzing meds early. He is still unconscious; heavily sedated. They will be gradually trying to bring him back to consciousness in the next few days. He was moved out of the complex, spinning mechanism he has been n for a week.

Estimate is, he will be in ICU another week, in a private room for two weeks; then to a rehab center for 2 months, followed by a 6 month regimen of therapy at home. Annie (mom) is a retired RN who is available all the time, and we have a spare bedroom right next to a full bath.

Dr. says that 40% of the people who get this don't survive. He also said this was a bolt out of the blue. He says that 99 out of 100 who contract this (usually, pneumonia that mutates into total respiratory failure) don't even need hospitalization.

Family is still there at all times. We talk to him. No idea if he hears, but statistics say that comatose people who are talked to have a higher survival rate.

Thanks to all. you have no idea how much the good words and wished have helped my son, Logan Russell Lay, and me; maybe most of all.

Hug your loved ones as often as possible.

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks in ICU. Still hooked up to feeding tube and air. Cannot tolerate food or water yet. Took a couple of steps twice. Slept 4 hours in the last 24...the only sleep he has had since he came to.

Looking at a transfer to a rehab center in a week or so. Still talks with a heavy British accent...."hello, father". Was a big Dr. No fan in the 80's when he was 10 or so. That's where this has to come from. Wakes up terrified. Today, a guy died in the next room. About 12 people (family members) rushed in, screaming. Logan lost it.

At the office for an hour to try to catch up.

Thanks for the support.
I REALLY Needed that.
Been home to clean up and change 4 times for an hour at a time. Waiting room chairs are not good replacements for comfortable beds.

Got a text about Logan yesterday saying he was on thickened liquid. The text was from HIM. They moved him late last night to a telemetry unit.

It's great!. He still has the feeding tube, which they are going to try to remove today. He walks 4 times for short distances and has a full schedule of occupational, speech, swallowing breathing therapy. As a precaution all ports are left in place if the "weaning" process takes a turn for the worse.

But (fingers crossed) he's out of the woods. The English accent disappeared yesterday at noon. His natural voice came back about 4:00. He began apologizing by 6:00. He tried to kill me and his mom; actually throwing hard objects at us.

He has a long way to go, but asked in a text a few minutes ago when we could go visit Chas.

I slept in my own bed last night for the first time without so much worry and stress that it kept me up all night.

Be back to see him at 6:00.

Can't wait to bring my boy home.

When I consider the support I got here, things get a little misty in he eye department.

Hi Russ,
Yes, the sooner you can get him home the better.
Hospital waiting rooms are the worst , you just want to pack your loved one up and take them home so you can look after them .
No stranger to it, my husband was in hospital for 8 months.
Forum gave me support and something to keep my mind occupied while hanging round the hospital waiting room.

All the best to you and Logan, glad to hear he is improving.

Best to get him home - that is where the heart is and the love helps heal the body. Good news that he is slowly recovering
Take care of yourself as well or you can't help him if you collapse so rest up too.

All the best........
