My opinion:

The same settings for both instruments are a must if we are comparing.

There is more going on with the Sx900. Clean it up, then compare.

The good thing by having more than you need, is that you can change from less to more, making less sound great. If more is not there you are stuck.

I also think it‘s a bit unfair. Out of the box, the Yamaha doesn‘t have the suitable style. If the style and the solo guitar playing were improved, it would be closer.

Don’t get me wrong the Yamaha sounds great but biab sounds more live which I like. That’s the reason I prefer Korg. For a studio sound nothing beats the Yamaha.

Have them both and love them both! Definitely love the tools onboard BIAB. You can import an MP3, have BIAB interpret the chords and then go fishing through the 6,000+ styles to find one that best matches the original song. Fun for sure! And of course the SX900 is a rockin' keyboard machine! Great sounds, great styles, and great capability to mix and "pare down" as you see fit.

On a sidenote, just had a hardware fault/failure on my 2020 BIAB drive. It was working on about 60% of the styles but would crash if I selected certain styles, followed by a "There is a problem with this disk" error message from Windows. I spent a little time on Chat w/PGMusic and lo and behold, another fresh 2020 BIAB disk showed up overnight. PGMusic has an amazing crew and products.

SX900 + BIAB = Amazing capabilities for any musician!

I haven’t used BIAB in many years but prior to lead sheets in pdf form being so plentiful I used to print lead sheets from the app. I also liked playing along with tunes to get the feel and timing of the song correct.

This doesn't seem like a fair comparison. Of course the software's changes, bass line, variations, etc., can potentially be smoother and more realistic because BIAB can look ahead and see what the next chord is going to be. The Yamaha (and every true arranger) is REACTING to player input in real-time. Which, at least in theory, permits the player to improvise. Different tools for different purposes.

Edit: I'm more curious about BIAB's ability to convert .mp3s to MIDI. How good is it? Are they accurate??

Exactly, BIAB doesn‘t produce it in real time. It would be fairer comparing it to a Yamaha midi file.

Thats because biab uses audio based files..
Only arranger that does this is Ketron..

By the way, if you want this on the ipad, have a look at

It really is apples and oranges. BIAB, for the most part, are real musician performances played in non real time...SX900 is a real time arranger. Don’t get me wrong, BIAB is a great tool if you want to delve into the depths of the program...SX900 or any arranger...turn it on and play

The problem with many of these comments is the fact that you really can't just sit down and do a respectful job on an arranger without spending hours in preparation. I love my 3000 and no doubt would love a PA4x but I absolutely love my BIAB just as much. BIAB is much cheaper with $150 yearly updates. Live musicians are much better than MIDI when it comes to sound.

If i would build a dream arranger workstation..
Band in a box would be a part of it..
Because it would be software based...
With a dedicated hardware controller..

The only thing missing in biab for integration with the rest of an arranger, is an option to send its chords out as midi notes.. so you can not really use it to feed your arranger to mix biab tracks and arranger tracks and multipads...

Hi Bachus,
I might have misunderstood what you meant, biab sends out chord data, and an arranger will follow the chords.

Not sure if that’s what you meant though.
