Looks like a programmer may have been too busy eating his sandwich (or chatting online) when he released his portion of the SX900 code. Has anyone tried the same sequence on the Genos? The good thing is it is software and bugs can be found and fixed. I don't use "Favorites" and have now sworn them off til I read otherwise. Thanks for the share DNJ!

Hopefully. I would imagine if the right folks have been notified, the fix will be a priority. I'm sure critical errors are more important than enhancements. Probably just a small logic error somewhere.

Steve - HA HA! I have done a lot of time in the programmer trenches, but that particular artwork is not my own. If you had your Genos there at the Villages, you could see if the same problem exists there, but I am guessing the board is in Rhoadie since you have not reported any issues w/the "Big G" like that...

Stay safe over there - saw where a bunch of 'canes landed over in Central Fl over the weekend. Threats coming from all directions! Stay safe Brother Steve!

Yo Randy, I'm with you brother. I'm staying away from "Favorites" until Yamaha address's this problem.

For now, we can contact Yamaha and let them know, They have a great customer satisfaction history, and if we all voice our concerns, even better

Yamaha Contact Support

And I'm trying to figure out the best phone number to call. Years ago I talked to a Steve Deming. I'm not sure if I got his name correct, or if he's still with Yamaha. But the point is we all need to contact Yamaha and let them know of this problem.

BUT . . . Once the "BUG" bites you, it takes a system board replacement to fix that. There are 3 or 4 folks over on the PSR Tutorial Forum that will attest to that.

Tnicoson - can you please put a link to the post where the Favorites problem has resulted in main board replacements? Much appreciated. Sure looks like a software problem which Yamaha usually always addresses via firmware.

Here's a list of the types of problems they fixed via firmware for the Genos - several "Unresponsive" problems have occurred on Genos - has anyone here had board replacements required for their Yamahas?:

***** (Partial) List of Genos Firmware Fixes *****
Fixed a problem in which, under a certain situation, the indication lamps (MIDI indicator) on the Mixer display would not work.
Fixed a problem in which, under a certain situation, the current time would not appear on the Home display.
Fixed a problem in which the Registration Memory function would not work properly in some cases.
Fixed a problem in which the Audio Song parameters were not properly saved to Registration Memory in certain situations.
Fixed a problem in which certain Music Finder Record files of Tyros series could not be imported.
Fixed a problem in which, under a certain situation, the Audio Section of Audio Style would not play back.

Fixed a problem in which Initial Touch On/Off settings would not function properly when calling up a specific Registration Memory.
Fixed a problem in which, under a certain situation, the Registration Freeze function would not work properly.
Fixed a problem in which certain Music Finder Record files of Tyros series could not be imported.
Fixed a problem in which the Panel Sustain parameter seems to have an effect on the Left part because the Panel Sustain can be edited on the Voice Edit display for the Left part.
Fixed a problem in which the instrument would occasionally become unresponsive to operations when executing Search.
Fixed a problem in which the instrument would occasionally become unresponsive to operations when changing the mode of Wireless LAN.
Fixed a problem in which the instrument would become unresponsive to operations when the pop-up window is closed in certain situations.
Fixed a problem in which the instrument would become unresponsive to operations when saving a file in certain situations.
Fixed a problem in which characters would occasionally not be displayed correctly.
Fixed a problem in which the Multi Pad information would not be stored to the OTS of a User Style.
Fixed a problem in which the REGISTRATION MEMORY buttons and REGIST BANK [-]/[+] buttons would not work properly when a particular display was shown.
Fixed a problem in which some parameters were not stored/restored with the System Backup function and Registration Memory function.
Fixed a problem in which the Registration Memory Bank name would not be shown properly on the Home display, when a Bank file of the Tyros series was loaded.
Fixed a problem in which the instrument would occasionally not respond to operations, when certain Registration Memory Bank files of the Tyros series was loaded.
Fixed a problem in which some Playlist Records would occasionally not be loaded when a Playlist file was loaded.
Fixed a problem in which some Preset Voice folders would occasionally not be shown on the Voice Selection display.
Fixed a problem in which noise would occasionally occur when changing the "Organ Rotary Slow/Fast" parameter in some Effect Types.
Fixed a problem in which certain parameters of a MIDI Song could not be recorded properly when re-recording with the MIDI Multi Recording display.
Fixed a problem in which the instrument response would slow down when certain Preset Wallpaper was selected.
Fixed a problem in which the detailed settings of some functions assignable to the Foot Pedals on the Assignable display would not be shown properly in some cases.
Fixed a problem in which the setting of switching between the AUX Out and the Sub 3-4 on the Line Out display would not be restored properly.
Fixed a problem in which Auto Power off would be executed when the Panel Lock function was enabled.
Fixed a problem in which the Factory Reset function on the Utility display would occasionally not work properly.
Fixed a problem in which some parameters were not stored properly to the "MIDI" Setup File when saving the data on the Utility display.
Fixed a problem in which some parameters were not stored properly to the MIDI Setting file when saving the data on the MIDI display.
Fixed a problem in which some assignable Functions on the MIDI External Controller display would not work properly.
Fixed a problem in which wireless LAN connection would not be established in Infrastructure mode, when the password included some special characters.
Fixed a problem in which the lighting of the buttons would occasionally not work properly.
Fixed a problem in which some displays would occasionally not be shown properly.

PS - Scanning the list above, it looks like whoever programmed the "Registration Memory" functions was either a trainee or spending too much time on Facebook and not on the Genos code... Just sayin'

Randy, The Big G is in Rhody, so I can't test anything but that type problem never happened with the G.

We had a tornado cross I-75 in Bellview that's about 10 miles from we are, that's getting a little too close for comfort.

Larry and Ed, I'll get to that web site as well and send Yammie a message.

Here is the link to the PSR-Tutorial thread discussing the need to replace the SX900 system board to recover from a "Favorites" crash. See posts by "andorra" and "blackpool". There is a third (Aquilauno), but he is awaiting the end of the lockdown so that he can get out and ship his board to the Service Center, and it looks like Christopher Fernandes is still trying to get his to boot. So that is 4 dead SX900's right there. We know at least the first two are legitimate reports, because Yamaha has already replaced the system boards in those.

https://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index.php/topic,55088.msg430016/topicseen.html#msg430016

Sorry! I can't get the link button to work. Please see the link in DonM's reply immediately following.

We are talking about two entirely different fixes here. Yes, Yamaha should be able to fix the original problem with a firmware update, but once the problem has crashed your system and it will not boot, you can not apply a firmware update to a system that will not boot, so you have to replace the system board to fix the crash. This is the part that has everyone so concerned. If the bug bites, your SX900 is dead until you can get the system board replaced, but there appears to be varying degrees to the severity of the crash. Some folks have been able to reboot and recover, while others have not. It looks like the more "favorites" you had saved, and the more you were deleting, when the crash occurs, the greater the severity.

Thanks Tnico and Don - wow. Sounds like Yamaha needs to retrain or fire a programmer or two. This is not a good thing. I have never used a Favorite and will not mess with that function. Thanks again for pointing out the post - Hopefully Yamaha will respond to these unfortunate users in a timely manner.

Thanks Steve - hunker down!

Stay safe all - we are set for a terrible (weather) day here - under tornado watches and severe storm watches all day and into late this evening.

There are at least two threads on the PSR-Tutorial Forum regarding the SX900 "Favorites lock-up problem". In reading through the two threads, that I am aware of, I gather that, so far, the Genos has exhibited NO SIGNS of suffering from the "Favorites lock-up problrm" - just the SX900, so far. There was one reply, in one of the threads, about the S950, but that guy was just hijacking the SX900 thread to air his beefs about Yamaha's quality control, so you need to discount that reply. It has nothing to do with the current SX900 problem.

Ted

Randy,

I have not tried SX900 registrations on the Genos and after seeing this video I won’t. I was lucky in a sense there was no reason for me to try the SX900 registrations on the Genos.

Harold - before you do something drastic, try using a 76 key controller (or other kb) to control the SX. The piano comes alive with a better keybed. Ask Rikki - she and I have the Yamaha P121, and it makes a world of difference.

This is what I emailed Yamaha:

A few PSR Tutorial forum members have been reporting that the PSR-SX900 does not completely boot up, and freezes at the Yamaha SX-900 Logo. Nothing works to correct this problem including a hard or soft reset, or upgrading/downgrading firmware. It also appears this major problem has been narrowed down, and somehow related to the "Favorites" folder. Members have stated when saving to Favorites caused the freeze, although not 100% that is a reason

Owners, (like me), of this keyboard are now fearful of a "frozen brick" PSR-SX-900. Obviously this "boot up" flaw needs to be fixed, and concerns, and fears addressed. Otherwise, The SX-900 is a great keyboard, and we are confident that Yamaha will give immediate attention to correct this problem on the newest arranger keyboard, the PSR- SX-900

Thank You
Larry Hawk

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This was the reply email from Yamaha:

Larry,

I reviewed our service website and did not find any known issues regarding the boot up or using favorites process. Yamaha is not aware of any defects at this time. Keep in mind when you see issues like this in forums it easy to assume the issues are related. However they often do not provide enough information to jump to that conclusion.

If you are experiencing this type of issue please let us know. We would like to gather more detail regarding what you are doing when this happens. We may even gather a backup file and test it on unit we have available.

We encourage anyone else who is having this issue also to contact us so we can troubleshoot with them and determine a solution.

Please know we do appreciate the information you provided and even if you do not own the product this case is documented under the product model PSR-SX900. We keep track of the cases to help find any potential issues.

Best Regards,
Desmond

I haven't had the booting problem you've experienced. Maybe because I haven't used Favorites. Nor, will I use Favorites until the issue is addressed. But, I did write Yamaha about getting multiple error messages requiring shutting down, rebooting and having to delete the apparent registrations that triggered the error. Based on PSR Tutorial posts, others have also experienced the same problem. Desmond responded to me, much the same as he responded to you. It didn't feel like a serious concern to him.

I haven't had the boot up problem either, but my email to Yamaha was for those that had the SX900 actually freeze at the logo, supposedly from using Favorites. I didn't want it to happen to others, including me smile I'm starting to think that those few affected either tried something crazy, or they just got stuck with a lemon. It happens.

I'm glad you reported the delete registration / reboot thing, but there might be a reason why the SX900 does that. Maybe it's just a cautious aspect of the keyboard that protects the software from infectious registrations.

Either way, it's good to let them know. We'll see what happens

Could this be due to the touch screen in some way?

Larry - no problems to report from my end either (knock wood). I will tread carefully and at this point, have no intent to attempt any Favorites fun until I get some more details if there are any in the future. Thanks for contacting Yamaha. I would guess if they know of a problem causing board replacements, they would quickly develop new firmware to prevent the sequence of actions causing those problems... just thinkin'.... anyway, enjoy the SX900 (as I do) and thanks again for your action!

Anything is possible, but Yamaha does not think there is a problem
And after thinking about it, there are two, maybe three reported cases from PSR Tutorial, of the SX900 freezing at the logo screen. So perhaps it's not really an issue at all.

It sounds more like a few isolated instances. If this was a real problem, with numerous complaints, I would think Yamaha would want to quickly find a software fix, rather than have to deal with returns and replacements.

There's no telling what might go wrong with a kb or why ...
A few years ago I was experiencing a 'lock-up' with my Pa900 (hmmm, maybe it's something about the '900'number) ... I got in touch with KORG USA and they helped me track it down to when I was searching for files on the USB ... I believe I sent them a copy of the USB files, and there was a corrupted non-KORG file on the USB that was causing the problem ...

Hopefully, YAMAHA will be able to replicate the problem and find a solution ...

This whole Freeze Up/Favorite issue may have been overblown.

Of all the forums and sites I checked, three people had this problem. One of them sent his back to the dealer and received a replacement. A second had his freeze-up fixed with the latest update, and a third is still working on his.

This is not to say, contacting Yamaha didn't help and who knows, maybe that led to the latest update that included the Favorites Freeze fix.

So like everything else, just relax and enjoy, nothing's perfect, things break, people pass. It happens smile
