Small correction Gary. The Studiologic Numa Compact 2X is NOT an ARRANGER keyboard, just an inexpensive multi-purpose synth with a half-decent piano voice which was the only voice on it I used. The rest is organ and a 'canned' drum track. Just didn't want to confuse anyone. But thanks for your nice comments. Glad to see you still hanging in there and staying active.

Nice job even if you were rusty on the tune. The piano sounded fine and the organ sounded really good. So am I right , you did piano RH, organ LH, and bass pedals. IF you did your my kind of guy, great !

Sorry to disappoint Bill but the piano is overdubbed (multi-tracked) and the bass is left hand with pedal 'percussion stab' to add 'attack'. My age and arthritis won't let me do just pedals on up-tempo or even mid-tempo tunes anymore. I went from all (or mostly) pedals to pedal doubling with LH to LH with pedal taps. I don't feel bad as even young guys (playing this style) still play mostly LH bass. Very few have Barbara Denerlein-type skills . FWIW, even when I played pedals, I had a sustain unit on the pedals. Luckily, my KeyB has built-in pedal sustain (adjustable). I still play pedals on ballads and other slow tunes and even some 1-5 type latin tunes. Hard to explain, it just seems to evolve as your physical condition deteriorates. Have you noticed how your solos are less aggressive as you age .

As we learn solos mellow with age. Less is more with musical experience. I never liked solos which are just a million notes without a destination.
I can still play pedals pretty well even though I only have a 13 note PK5 hooked to my BK9. And no bench so its hard to play properly. Love to get an SKX with an 18 note pedalboard but space and reality stops me.
I always had sustain on my pedals on my B3. Nova IV unit and it was killer. Later I found out all those guys were doing LH. No one could ever teach me so I figured it was all pedals on those JS records and practiced a lot. Got pretty good and it worked well as I could comp with my LH for a fuller sound.
Still a nice job so keep playing.

In reading your post,I thought about my BK9 you have. I sometimes regretted not taking the time to balance the volumes,as it sure had some nice features,including a killer Leslie sim. Oh well.

You mentioning pedals got me to thinking of pairing my SK1 with my Studiologic 13 pedals. I know it would give me the needed low end,needed without my Ketron SD40,which I use with it now. The problem is that my pedal experience has been in playing church services for years with 33 pedals. For pop music from a fake book,I'm afraid i'm a 1+5 player,as I can't see how I can heel and toe on a little pedal. Just thinking out loud. What do you do?

Chas, I enjoyed this, I always have liked your style of play. A few days ago I was out for a walk and found your posting of "Since I Fell For You." I enjoyed listening to that one again too.

Thanks Steve, as you can see, I like old and I like blue (as in 'bluesy'). I also like grooves that 'push' a little. Except for Korg, I don't feel the 'pulse' (sync, I guess) from most of the arranger swing/jazz styles. They just seem too much 'on the beat' for my taste....but that's just me. For the majority of folks, it's just fine. This will likely start a firefight but for me, Korg is hands down the best for nailing a 'groove' feel, especially in this genre'. Although it seems to be trending at the moment, I have to admit that I'm not a big Ketron fan (the truth will set you free ). When I say Ketron, I'm referring to the styles, not the instrument...although with arrangers, styles DO pretty much define the instrument. Obviously, it just a matter of personal taste. Certainly my opinion is no more valid than anyone else's. Just not my cup of tea.

As for 'Since I fell for you', I love the old Buddy Johnson version but check out the Al Jarreau version, it's killer. Are you back home in Rhody yet?
