I may have posted this before - don't remember. I was listening to a jazz podcast on ALEXA today and one of his tunes popped up. This is one of my favorite Stan Getz tunes and I thought I'd post (or possibly repost) my shoddy version of it. It's mainly my Legend EXP (organ) and SEVEN. Very nice rendition, Chas. I really liked the organ solo and comp. I absolutely love jazz organ and once I get a bit more solid on jazz piano , I’d like to get a better grasp of jazz organ.

Not to get off topic, but while Stan Getz is without a doubt a jazz great, he seemed to lack human decency.

Paul, I was aware of his reputation but I didn't realize he was such a total jerk. That was very enlightening and shows clearly how so many of our heroes have 'feet of clay'. Thanks for sharing that; 'the truth shall set you free'.

Thanks Gary. I can sort of feel a little sorry for super talented people like Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Billy Holliday, Amy Winehouse, ...and the list goes on, falling victim to the 'drug and booze' lifestyle, but it sounds like Getz was just a plain straight-ahead, king-sized, amoral jerk. Sure, he was a great musical talent but his dark side also needs to be remembered and I'm glad Paul brought it to light. You can't sanitize history to make yourself feel better.

I am a history buff, Chas. I have thousands of books on world and US history and have read them all at least twice. I was totally fascinated by what I read of Chinese history and all the discoveries they made that people throughout the world use today.

For example, they discovered celestial navigation long before Columbus crossed the Atlantic, during which time, he used a chart created by the Chinese and given as a present to the Pope. They circumnavigated the globe in the largest sailing vessels ever constructed, some measuring more than 600 feet long and landed on the north American continent 63 years before Columbus.

I recently gave away more than 100 leather bound books on the US Civil War, all of which were written by actual participants in that war. I was amazed at the mastery of the writers use of the English language and how well these books were written, despite the fact that at that time in this country's lifespan, education took a backseat to the labor market. Most families in the late 1850s were large so the children could work the farm fields as early as 5 years of age.

One of the things Carol and I enjoyed most when we were in reasonably good health was driving around the US and visiting many of the historic sites. We learned a lot and saw things many folks rarely think about every visiting or seeing.

Thanks again for posting that song. I wish others would post songs as well, and I must admit, I have not done so in several years, mainly because I don't spend much time at the keyboard these days. Maybe, with a bit of luck, I will get a day with a reduction in pain where I can enjoy playing again. As for now, I start the day with a Delaudid and it it with one as well.

Yes indeed, “jerk” seems a good way to describe Stan Getz. But there’s no denying his artistry, and scholars of jazz will always study his work. I particularly enjoy playing on Pennies from Heaven recorded in 1957 with the Oscar Peterson Trio. Check out the transcription in the video above.

Chas, I stopped the computer, reached for my big Guild and played along with this historic piece three times.
