I talk to Gary every other day, and, sadly, he's not doing real well.

However you do it, please send your best wishes to him.

He REALLY IS one of the GOOD GUYS around here.

Love ya, man!

Having had to face my own mortality last year, I know that it’s the associations and friendships you fear losing the most. We all miss Gary here as he fights the good fight, and wish him comfort and ease at the end of the journey. His has been a voice of experience and help here for so many years, and no matter what, that will never change.

Thanks everyone, for those wonderful comments. I am currently enrolled in Hospiss as of today. They said I would make the transition while remaining at home, and the hope to make it as painless as possible. The pain at this point is excruciating. Going to start some heavy meds beginning tomorrow.

Thanks again, everyone,

Gary

Russ, I am now officially on Hospiss. Don't count me out, though. At this stage, they're mainly trying to manage the pain, which is mainly in my lower back, legs and feet. The pain level ranges from 8 to 10, with higher spikes.
My lungs are worse, and I use the rescue inhaler 10 to 20 times a day. At night I sleep with a bipap machine, which is keeping me alive.

I have lost a lot of my strength and have to really work hard doing basic exercises. Much of this can be attributed to my lousy lungs.

I don't know how much more time I have, but I don't think it's much.

Gary, I'm sad to read it; wish you to have some improvement the soonest possible; you are a strong man, but strong people have bigger fights. I see the seriousness of the situation, but sometimes things seem hopeless, yet there are good moments to come regardless. I know you are not a religious person, I'm not much of it either, but I believe that life is a tricky thing, it runs fast; but if such a mystery as life on earth exists, I believe there are other funny thing exist as well, and this is more of a first lesson, and you did very well;

I think existence of music proves that people are more than just atoms and molecules, if music exists, I bet a lot of other things exist which we are still unaware of in this life, but will somehow learn later.

Sergey, how I wished I could have sailed to Russia and met with you in person. Unfortunately, old age and failing body parts made this impossible.

Thanks for just being there old friend,
Gary

It's a pleasure to hear from everyone here and read those wonderful comments. The Hospiss ladies upped the morphine dosage quite a bit, and while it reduced the pain, the constipation side effects kicked in, which produced more pain, but in a different area. Bad news with a a colostomy.

I will do my best to keep in touch with everyone as best I can,

Love you all,

Gary

Years ago, when I first found SZ, I was a novice to the world of arrangers, This site was simply put, a fabulous home for knowledge, friendship and encouragement.

Gary D. provided all three in large doses and was there for help every time I reached out for assistance.

Gary, thank you for the time you took with me way back when. I've always enjoyed our many phone conversations through the years and our talks about things musical and non musical.

You have left a mark on so many of us, its hard to do justice to your outreach on the SZ.

I hope that your pain is better controlled as you enter this next chapter. Wishing you all good things wherever your journey takes you.

Godspeed, Gary...
